Oil Pressure Guage Reads Max Level All The Time

Hi. I searched the formum for this problem and did not find the answer.

I just purchased a 1995 e320 and the only problem I have identified so far is the oil pressure is always pegged at the highest level. Any advice on how to troubleshoot/repair is appreciated.

Thanks,

Steve

The oil pressure guage reading at max level is caused by one of three things. 1. Sensor is bad, 2. Sensor wire disconnect/shorted or 3. Dash guage faulty.

Start by checking the wire, have your mechanic do it, you can then proceed to replacing the sensor and lastly, replacing the guage (its the most expesive, so I would do it last)

THis is a problem? Mine has always read as being maxed, as soon as i start the car.

I always assumed that max oil pressure was a good thing? damn.

Anyone?

Mine does same thing, I don't think it is a problem, though.

Just change the sensor and I think you guys will be fine unless you have really crappy wiring.

No it is not "fine" for the oil guage to read at max all the time, it should flux, reading higher as your driving and lower while at idle, everyone who has posted here has a problem with their oil pressure system, whether or not you elect to address the problem is up to you of course.

well, i seem to remember being an apprentice motor mechanic at the mercedes benz agent and being told that normally the needle will fluctuate as the oil pressure goes up and down, but if it stays pegged at three its fine.

i even remember that that conversation segued into multiviscosity oils. so please dont tell me what i know or dont know.

its fine if it stays pegged on three. its fine if it fluctuates. its not fine if it stays below 1 at idle and doesnt go up when you increase the engine speed. this is assuming that the actual gauge and sensors are operating correctly of course.

is a German Tank
what kind of oil are you using? which viscosity? thicker oil vs. synthetic lightweight would have an effect on oil pressure I would assume.
