Tires

Had my 400E for 3.5 years and haven't had to replace tires. Mine look great on the outside but just found out from my shop they are worn all the way on the inside(toe problem). I need to replace tires and get alignment - anyone have a preference? I have some Weatherwise Michelin from the last owner and I used to put Michelin Pilots on my last car.

Thanks for any input.

The Pilots probably won't last very long. A number of people here have reported just 10,000 miles. They also get quite noisy as they wear down. Most expensive tire you could get as well.

My mechanic loves Toyos so thats what I went with. They seem sure enough in the wet and are very sticky in dry weather.

I use continental contacts, They handle great and are very quiet. If your car is lowered or if you have 17 or 18s you can go with the continental Low Profile tires sorry their name escapes me, they are more expensive but still cheaper than Pilots and will last much longer. If you still run the stock size you can go wider at least up to 215s and you will really feel the difference.

If you have OEM tires, just go with whatever suits your commuting habits. My 124 needs tires even though its been garaged for a few months now and Costco has a sale on Michelins but if miss that I'll just hit up some cheapo BFGs. If you have rims then invest in something that won't crap out on you. Stay away from those no name China made brands like Wan Li and Nankang because the quality control on those tires are so inconsistent.

ding ding ding, we have a winner.

nor cal has good advice there.

stick with a good name brand.

all tires get noisy as they get older. michelins stay quiet and smooth riding and still have decent wet handling for longer in their life than most others. its all about the full depth sipes. (google it, or wiki it.)

how long tires last depends on how you drive (aggressive/ sedate,) where you drive (urban/ freeway), maintenance (regular/ irregular) and so on. other factors like towing, four wheeling, lots of starts and stops (commuters, real estate, delivery, soccer mum) lots of freeway (commuters) and so on also affect tire wear.

choose a tire based on how you drive rather than how it looks. you dont want a performance tire if you dont drive at 10/ 10ths at any time.

i recommend michelin MXV4. $60 coupon at costco right now if you buy four. but they arent cheap.

I have Dunlops on my 400E - I am impressed - out the door at Discount Tire for $500.00 with the lifetime balance and roadhazard.

Pleased with it for the last 6,000 miles

I have the Toyo T1-R's on my BMW and can't say enough good things about them, I will be putting them on the 124 in the spring. In the rain they are like nothing else i've had before, they stick almost as good in the wet as they do in the dry, and in the dry they hold like no tomorow so... yes they are expensive, BUT the way I look at it, money well spent since you can't put a price on your safety, or that of your family
