Still cleaning up the engine

Just a couple things I've done in my process of getting the engine a bit more spiffy. I painted the airbox cover and the exhaust manifolds. Came out ok.

Whoa, that looks good. What kind of paint did you use for the Air box cover and also for the exhaust manifolds? Did you sand them down and stuff ? Could you provide a detailed instruction. I have been meaning to do it, but don't have the info on how to.

For the airbox I couldn't find the right kind of gunmetal color in a high temp paint I liked. I found the right color (graphite) from a wheel paint. I took the cover and used aircraft grade paint remover and sanded it after removing the old paint. I primered it using high temp primer, painted down the graphite, and set a couple coats of clear. The key is to be patient, don't try to set down the heavy coats at once. Do light coats w/ a flash period of 10 minutes in between. For the manifolds I cleaned the area off using some engine cleaner, masked off the areas I didn't want painted and sprayed with some high temp flat black (the 1200 degreee kind). It's all about prepping what you're painting, I've messed up enough times to realize that.

I'm sure you can do that to your 420, just use your imagination.

Its giving me ideas for my project Land Rover. The original silver paint is pealing off the engine block and I'd like to clean it up.

How did you remove the rust from the headers?

I did nothing to the rust. If it bothers you try scuffing it up with some sand paper or try shooting some of that paint that turns rust into black primer (I forget what its called). If you lay enough coats of high temp paint you should be able to seal off the rust.

there is a paint that is specifically for exhaust parts, as opposed to just high-heat applications.

I know, I have tried them, and never had anything stick on manifolds. I painted the manifolds on my w108, built and detailed/painted an Austin H. engine, and a XK140 engine. The Jag engine had factory porcelain on the manifolds, but even that started to chip in places after 50 years. Various types, methods, engines, and Never did it last

If it works, ie lasts 10,000mi, i'd love to know what it is.

I painted the manifolds knowing it wouldn't last forever. I just had a can of duplicolor high temp ceramic paint lying around and decided to try it out. It's temporary until I have my spare manifolds ceramic coated.
