Need 400E or E420 for engine swap...

I recently bought a 92 300TE with 168,000 on her, totally stock but in good running condition. I'd like to buy a wrecked/salvaged 92/93 400E or 94/95 E420 to do the swap. I'm here in socal so anything in the region would be great, I'm in no hurry but thought I would get the word out in case a member out there knows of someone or see's an add in the paper, on the web, etc.

I look forward to documenting every step with pics, write-up, etc. but any info you guys might have out there would a tremendous help, links to other sites or technical data, etc. Thanks again for the help in locating one.

Doing that swap is difficult if you do not have any knowledge in engine swaps. You will have to build a secondary firewall to accomidate the larger engine. Check benzworld's w124 forum and you will see SMAW doing a similar swap to a 300CE. Also, Satish at Motorwerks is doing a 5.0 swap in a e320 coupe. Pictures of that can be seen at 500e.com

95 E300 Diesel, yeah that's right.

As for the firewall I saw that on the website you are referring to, and while no custom job is easy, the challenge of the job is half the fun. This summer I helped my neighbor drop a Corvette/Impala engine into his 88 4 door Jeep Cherokee, we did a manual swap a few months before. I learned that the engine going in part is really the easy part, using the new space contraints to make all the accesories work is the challenging part, however with the donor car there in front of me, cd's with tech data, I don't expect it to be overwhelming - challenging, yes but not impossible.

Here's a link to benzworld where a guy is in the process of swapping an e420 engine into a coupe. It's the same exact swap you want to do. Based on his 12/31/05 post, he measured the e420 and the 300ce's firewall locations and transmission tunnels and they are identical. He didn't have to modify the firewall at all.

This link just kind of shows you his progress... It isn't very technical. But he would be a good guy to ask! It's been a year in the working for him, but he's only a few weeks away from turning the key...

Thanks BigPete, after I locate and source a donor car I suppose the first thing I need to do is schedule a visit in Santa Monica, thanks again for the heads-up.

without reading the link posted, I seem to remember from many other sources that it requires the whole front clip to seat the engine properly. If you have a donor car, perhaps you can just take the whole front?

Interesting idea ZorroAMG, thats why I want the car sitting there for the job, not just an engine from a salvage yard. In reading the write-up from the guy in Santa Monica doing the 400CE he even had to get another cluster because the speedo didn't match the wiring harness from the 400 - its those types of issues that will drive you crazy, most of these other highly talked about conversion projects will be done soon, I expect to learn much from those guys before I start.

the firewalls are NOT the same at all. They have to be changed for the v8 to fit. The 119 v8 motor is very WIDE.

sunman - this is from s.m. autoworks in Santa Monica, he's almost finished with a 300CE V8 conversion.

"We were taking some measurements today, from a 400e vs 300ce. Trans tunnel is the same width, firewall is the same. The engine bay is the same dimensions firewall to radiator support."

When you remarked the firewall & trans tunnels were not the same and would need modification did you mean from a 300TE or are you just implying you think there will be modifications but don't really know for sure?

Thanks

If you keep reading the thread, you will notice that he has changed the firewall later since the engine does NOT fit. Transtunnel is the same though.
