124, it too was a '92 400E, black with AMG rims and I loved that car. A university music professor bought it from me and I see it in town from time to time. I have offered to buy it back if he ever wants to get rid of it. Great, great car and superb specimen!
Thanks! This is my second one. I had a 1992 400E from 1997 - 2000. I sold it and bought a big *** truck - regretted it ever since. I started looking for another one about 2 years ago - I found this one in Austin. Love the car, drives perfect, smoother than my new Suburban - but I am getting nickled and dimed on repairs. At this point, I have spent so much money on it, i might as well keep it - because I know as soon as i sell it - i will want another. Oh well, these cars are hobbies, and hobbies aint cheap. I am truly amazed at how fast, smooth and responsive this car is after almost 15 years.

It is worth a call. Let me know if you head this way.
Dude, Tony kicks ***!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I've been quoted $2500-$2800 for the trans and $3000-$3500 for the head gasket (with all associated repairs), so basically $5500-$6300 at all of the places I've called.

Tony just quoted me $1390 for the head gasket, $1245 for the trans, $138 for the differential bushings, $38 to flush my brake system, and $27.50 to clean/lube the sunroof.

For $2838.50 I'll make the 3 hour drive to San Antonio!

Thanks for giving me the guy's number!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Nice, I knew that head gasket quote you got was obscene. If you want to keep this car for a long time though, I'd get the valve job too.

that includes valve seals, thermostat, coolant (with flush and new reservoir), plugs, and oil.

The scary thing is that I called about 5 places in Houston and got the same prices (the expensive ones, that is)

Matt:

No problem on the hookup. You can buy me a beer or 6 when you bring the car to town. I had the same deal on the tranny - I was quoted anywhere from $2,800 - $4,500. Got Tony's name from another shop here in town - nice folks - and I had my car to him within an hour. Good work and very nice guy. He did my tranny in a day and a half.

Let me know if you need some help when you bring it in - if I am available, i will help you get to his place, etc...

Did you tell I sent you?

Steve

Yeah, when I talked to Liz she said "oh yeah, he was just here and said you were calling". Being a doc I know all about the value of referrals, especially getting the credit when you're the one doing the referring.

I'm definitely buying you several beers when I come into town!

Cool. I am looking forward to it. Doctor and a lawyer throwing back some beers - should be interesting! Glad the referral worked out - you'll be pleased with these folks.

OK, I dropped my baby at Tony's last night. He actually waited two hours after he closed just to meet me and go over my car face-to-face. Totally cool guy!

Steve, I would've called to meet up with you but it was kinda last minute. Besides I'd rather you saw me with a fully functioning car.

PS - I haven't forgotten about the beer...

Not a problem. I have been swamped since Tuesday. Let me know if you need a ride when you come to pick her up.
Happy holidays!
Steve
