First you need to take out your blinker lenses on the sides. They simply clip in. If you look, you'll see the plastic clipping mechanism. Then you'll see I think two hex screws that go into the sides of the headlight.
Next, you need to remove the trim plate that has the washer wipers attached. There is one bolt near your grille that you need to remove, and if I remember correctly, theres another bolt on the other end of that trim plate near the blinker lenses. I can't remember how the wiper mechanism comes apart, but it's easy. You should figure it out when you see it.
Then there's another bolt that is higher up and by your grill. It's kind of a biotch to get to, so you need to use a slim wrench and be patient with it... 1/4 turns at a time.
And lastly, I think there's one more bolt near the grill that you need to remove.
So to my memory, there are two bolts on each side, for a total of 4 bolts, plus the 2 additional bolts to remove the wiper trim plate. It looks like you already figured out that you need to remove that plastic thing on the top.
It's intuitive. I bet if you spent the time you took to write this post trying to figure it out on your own, you would've gotten it. Hell, you might've already done it yourself.
Good luck.

Charles, removing that back cover does not help you remove the headlight assembly, just the bulbs. All of the screws are accessed from outside of the engine compartment. Pete's instructions are pretty spot on, so they should help. On Tuesday I'll be at my computer with a w124 service manual on it if you need the complete instructions with diagrams. Just let me know.
