4matic shocks and struts

Recently bought a '91 4matic wagon with nearly 90K miles (2 owner, well kept). I understand these are heavy, underpowered etc. - not exactly a sporty drive. I love the solid, pliant ride, but I'm hoping for at least safe and neutral handling. To that end I've already replaced the stock 15" wheels for slightly wider 16" wheels with 55 series rubber. That has helped a lot. Now wondering if the shocks and struts may be ready to swap out.

How long do these shocks and struts last normally (I know it's an expensive job)? Was the setup for Euro W124 tighter than for US models? Do I have any options for firming things up a little more for a more positive feel (different shocks and struts? anti-roll bars?)?

Thanks for taking the time to consider this question...

1993 300E 4matic
I have a 1993 300E 4matic sedan, I am also looking into suspension options. Apparently the standard 300E front shocks don't fit on the 4matic, and not many places carry the 4matic ones, which stinks. Does anybody know of any good websites for shocks?

Be prepared to spend a good $1,200 on a set of rear 4-matic shocks.

Slighty larger rim/tire combos is about as far as you can go to improve your car's handling.

The expense is due to the self-leveling rear end. Maybe you can delete that?

You can probably swap in Sportline Swaybars and replace a number of the rubber bushings with their Sportline equivalents. If you want to you can remove the SLS.

92 300TE 4Matic
TE 4matic shocks

I've got a 92 300TE 4matic and I'm also looking for shocks

This place sells what I think are OEM shocks:
http://germanstar.net/124s.htm
But the rear shocks for TE 4matic are $400 a piece
I can't find any aftermarket 4matic shocks (front or rear)
Anyone seen any?
