As for the E31/8-Series, nothing beats a manual 850CSi:

I have seen an older model one of those cruising around my school. I don't know if it is the same series, but it has the same body style with the retractable headlights. It looks good.

I've been looking at 2001 740iL/750iL BMWs lately. Love to have one, but not ready to get rid of the 400E yet, and I don't need a third vehicle. Oh well, maybe some day.
Since eveyone is posting about their first cars, my first three were:
'69 Ford Torino GT
'68 Pontiac GTO
'67 Olds Cutlass Supreme

its a great little giant killa on the track. you'd be suprised at what it can keep up with thanks to its cornering and braking. acceleration is what youd expect from a 1.6 liter pushrod engine, even one tuned a little by lotus (actually converted to DOHC but originally a pushrod engine!!!)
anyway, i prefer the boxy small sedans of the 60s and early seventies.
i really should have added the BMW 3.0 CSi (my award for most beautiful car of all time,) volvo amazon (aka 122,) BMW 700, 300SL gullwing, MK1 ford escort (euro version,) opel kadett (1960s) mazda FD3 twin turbo (1990s,) jag e type, ur quattro, 68 cadillac coupe deville (not any other year) W460 (early) Geladewagen, 404 (1960s) unimog, mini cooper s (the OG, not this BMW crap) 68 pontiac firebird, 70 'cuda, and so on but i had a long enugh list. then of course theres the triumph bonnevilles and BSAs and nortons of the sixties on top of that.
im not really a fan of the expensive cars; the lambos and ferraris and so on. just a 959 but it would come behind all the above. if i lived somewhere where real estate is cheap (ie, not southern califonia, new york or boston) id already be most of the way to the cars in the pics. i nearly got an E30 M3 when i bought my 300E. even thogh id have loved it, im glad i got my panzer. its a great anonymous car, an amazing anonymous car. now if only i can find a silver 500E. install a 722.6 and im set, no need for any of those other cars.

I'm a convertible guy, and I only buy used cars. My E320 replaced a 90 LeBaron that got used up. I'm somewhat dismayed with the gadgetry and problems that comes with my E320. I thought I was buying quality and satisfaction of ownership! If I were to get rid of it, I'd consider something like a Volvo C70 or a Ford Mustang.
My girlfriend just bought a Volvo S40. I spent some time on the Volvo boards and find these cars don't seem to have a lot of problems.
I wouldn't mind a Mustang. Being in Detroit, I'm used to American cars. Spent my whole life around American cars. I've even helped design some of them.

92 300TE 4Matic
Audi S4
I got this 93 Audi S4 for about the same money as my Benz.
Its an awesome car
Has a 5 cyl 2.2 turbo, awd, 5spd
Smokes all 4 tires (255/40R17) in 3rd gear (with stage II chip and clutch)
Also has Big Porche breaks and Euro lights
My Benz tops out at 125 but my Audi goes 125 at half throttle and still throws you back in the seat if you stomp it at 125.
My Benz feels like driving a turd after driving the Audi.
Course Audis are cheap junk and I have to replace half the car every 5k miles but it's a lot more fun to drive than the Benz and it doesn't leak oil.
Here's a pict by my house

2010 RRS ; BMW K1200R; 14 E350 ; 14 RRS on order
I'd buy the same exact car
Also have a softspot for the upcoming R8, I have my order in and will have to see how deep the pockets are when the dealer calls. To do that, I gotta get cracking on this deal which is why I'm still at the office at 7PM on Friday.
