Question whats wrong?

hey everyone.
im new to this stuff so help would be appreciated.
i just bought a 87 300e
runs good but after 15 minutes it shuts off and needs to cool down before starting again.
orig owner is dying of kidney and lung caner so i got it from him.
planning on changing valve cover gasket and getting a filter kit and changing all fluids.
called around and i got different answers reguarding my topic.
some say its the water pump and others say its the fuel filter.
fuel pump is in excellent cond too
when i noticed the other overflow resivore or whatever it is called was broken off but still connected(could pull off and put back on) to radiator so when i would run the car it would leak antifreeze so if you squeezed the radiator hose it would spritz antifreeze though that hole.
could that be a problem too.
like i said, im new to mercedes and gotta have euro car people teach me some pointers

thanks, eric
