Lightbulb Viper 6 speed Manual in W124 Cabriolet

Why? Lets say for example you were building a 450+ HP motor with Torque to match and had a few doubts about the auto surviving frequent liftoff.
So you get the Viper trans off ebay where they are sometimes very cheap and you buy 300E pedal assembly and the other pieces, you could make your own bellhousing, and you have a good hacksaw and a good supply of Jb weld to fix the driveshaft would you do it?, Considering now you can get a new Chrysler from Mercedes Benz or a Crossfire powered by AMG it is not a great *******ization, but still would you???

And Yes I am crazy I just put C32 Brakes on a 4 cyl W124....

i doubt it would even come close to fitting...
are you planning to swap out your engine or try to make 450hp out of the 4cyl? would it be easier to drop in a benz V8 instead?
your car is looking very nice, by the way

If you've got the straight six just get the manual transmission that they made for it

Get a tranny out of a 190-16V and a twin turbo kit from Hugh's in England. You'll have more than enough fun then.

Wrecking yards, classifieds. Dealer if you can afford new. Search conversion if yours is not manual to begin with.

Back on topic, I was considering 6-speeds on my 914 but from what I've read it doesn't really buy you much unless your power band is wide and you want smoother acceleration.

I started a thread on perf. trans here: http://www.mercedesshop.com/shopforu...d.php?t=182138

Red face Viper Trans

The Porshe Trans is of interest but will likley cost more than the Viper T56
While the T-56 is proven to work with 600+RWHP, .

The T-56 in the viper can be found fairly cheap, and I am certain it can handle my needs, I don't need a 6 speed and would rather have a 5 speed, But don't know of many 5 speeds I can use or buy as cheap as the Viper T56.

I have seen the Viper T-56 on ebay for as little as $600.00 I am sure those Porsche guys would let a 928S4 trans get away for anything less than double that.

As with the C32 brakes I will start at bare minimum of what I know will work and give me what i want...

I thought the 928's had a transaxle.... that would kind of spoil that idea
What about using some ZF manual from an M3? Those are known to handle lots of power when they turbocharge those motors. Something I had considered when I had my 400E

ford used the tremec 5 speed in the last mustang. those are far more common than a viper and should be cheaper than the vipers box too.

you really need to also consider the diff ratio of the car for the gearbox youre getting. if your car is an E220 its going to have a high (numerically) diff and esepcially a convertible which would weigh more than a regular coupe. OTOH it might work in your favour to have a gearbox from a V8.

Ford Trans

The Ford T56 as in the mustang will break apart and pieces will exit the side of the car, Ford uses the weakest version of the T56 and it cost more for the ford T56 used than the viper T56 where I have been searching.
If I decide to use the T56 it has to come from a Viper as it can handle 600+RWHP, the ford T56 does not even come close it will break under what I plan to do to it.
Thing is the Viper is not a balanced car so them big bucks guys wrap them around poles all the time, when the insurance company cashes them out they buy another with even more power do the same thing so the parts are out there and Before long I will pick one up very cheap....those twin turbo 1000 hp vipers run on the t56 without problems, the ford T56 has a hard time holding 450 RWHP. A buddy told me the new GTO uses the same Viper T56 so, but from what I have seen it is still easier to track down a Viper T56 cheaper anyway.....

I have no interest in more than 450 hp in an open car but you never know......

My E220 is LSD have no idea about the ratio, whatever it is it will work for now

914

A few of my buddies are sickened with the 914 virus, I have to look for the picture there is a Red 914 running around san diego with a Pontiac GTO en
gine, I have another that I am helping a friend that is thinking of dropping in a 3.6, and yet another that is dropping in a Camaro 302 block....I have driven a 930 powered 914 and my hair is growing back...I felt as if i was strapped to the underside of a 747 just before liftoff...A 78-79 930 is still high on my list of all time favorites but after owning a few 911's there is nothing like a Benz, I just want a Fighter jet powered Benz Cabriolet and will be happy, Nothing scares me but that highly modified 930 engine powering a 914 had me almost scared....

I hate when people put American V8's in 914s! I love those little go-karts, but put a fkn porsche engine in it if you want more power! I read once about a guy that put a 928's V8 in a 914 - that's keeping it real!

I tell you, I have restored and drove a 53 austin healy 100-4, not the 3000 6 cyl which is so popular, but that car would have been a pig with a 427 motor. The idea behind those cars were light, somewhat economical and sporty... Americans have twisted ideas of sporty.... ie fast as can be in a quartermile.... BOOOOOORRRRRING! Forget putting a crude US motor in a euro model, go buy an IROC Camaro.

Conversions always strikes a nerve in a few people.

914's are like the vw bug, a canvas for many ideas. I drove a turbo Subaru 914 conversion and couldn't stop smiling. Hearing a V8 rumble behind you is fun too.

I built my V8 in my teens. Now that I'm older and more conservative I keep mods within certain boundries...well except the Audi turbo 914

I relate to Tim's "thinking out of the box"...

I have to agree. I drove a Monster Miata (Ford 5.0L in Miata) & felt it desroyed the balance of the car & killed the appeal of the small, light sports car.
I too had to go manual on my car & was blessed enough to find a 5-speed 300E on Craigs List for $1500.
