Anybody heard of what Monroe shocks are like? I found some that are pretty cheap and they say they are supposed to be an upgrade over OEM shocks. "Greater handling," you know, the usual stuff.

oh i absolutely agree, I'm just trying to manage available funds efficiently.. My regulator and motor crapped out on me while my window was partially down. So I essentially need a new right rear window assembly minus window glass. Which will cost me. But my shocks are completely blown, and I have these Vogtlands sitting under my bed at school and I wanted to get them put on before I drove home to Atlanta.
Believe me, If I had the money, I would absolutely get the Bilsteins.

My shocks are so blown that I scrape my beloved bumper-cover if I turn too sharply.. Basically I need new ones now. And cobblestones in the bar area of downtown Richmond?? I think the shocks are going to explode out of the top of my fenders at any speed. They feel violent. Extremely unpleasant.

W124
One guy on the board has KYBs on his w124 but its not lowered. He's satisfied with its performance but that still doesn't answer your question. I've seen KYBs and lowering springs on other vehicles that work out fine but you need to keep in mind the benz is a HEAVY car.

yeah, the kyb guy I talked to said that many people did run them with lowering springs, but he said that voided the warranty... I also forgot to ask which type of shocks most people used with springs, because they have several different types. Like they have a sport type, but I haven't seen them for the w124. Just japanese cars, for the most part.

Which pair of rear Bilstein's do I need? This website doesn't really specify. There are like 3 choices, and I'm planning on installing Vogtlands with them.

Don't ever buy KYB for german cars
At the risk of being flamed again, do not buy KYBs for a 201 or 124. I made that mistake on a 201, and a FOAF made that mistake on a 124. You would be better off getting used Bilsteins, any used Bilsteins, from a recycler, than wasting money on new KYBs (or Monroes) until you can afford what they all are advising you to get- Bilstein Sports. It looks like Chris will save you on the fronts, and there are plenty of used parts people in Atlanta for the rears. Or Potomac German Auto in Maryland. Sorry I didn't keep what I took off the E300 that I replaced with HD Bilsteins. Good luck, because you've definately got to keep your great front bumper surround from being cracked!
