WTB W124--4Matic or no?

So I'm considering one of several different cars, including a W124. My question is: is 4Matic worth it? It seems to add a bit to the price of the car, and I am wondering just how reliable a 15+ year old AWD system will be. Also, how well does it actually work as an AWD system?

Early 4-matics are very expensive if repair is needed.

Doesn't the transfer case need to be replaced every 80,000 miles on the early 4Matics?

I would check on MercedesShop.com for the gritty mechanical details.

I'd stay clear of early 4matics... why not get a G-wagen?

It would be hard to find an early Gray Market model, and still expensive. He'd have better luck with one of the newer models but they would be even more expensive.

Do love G Wagons though.

On the Wagons (or Estates as they're called). Rock solid as long as you don't get the AWD.

Well, I'm actually looking in Geneva, Switzerland, so European-market models aren't a problem. I thought about a Geländewagen, but gas here is $6/gallon, it might be a bit much for city/hwy driving and, well, the W124 just seems to be held in such high regard (and is pretty common around here still) that it seems like a good default choice (also, it's comfortably in my price range).

Anyway, so it sounds like early 4Matics are best avoided (I saw a 1993 300TD here for sale that seemed ideal, but it was a 4Matic). Thanks to all for your responses!
