Question 1994 E 320 Wagon vibration 125-140+ km/hr

Hi,

My 1994 E320 wagon (128,000 orig km) has a vibration that starts at about 125 km/hr and up. It has always had it since I bought it at about 110,000 km. I had new Michelin Alpins installed and balanced last fall. The drive shaft was checked (and re-balanced) and the problem persists. The front end has been aligned. The vibration doesn't seem to come through the steering. It is a light thrumming or fluttering sound, that seems to vary in intensity, and may be more pronounced on light acceleration.

Any ideas on what it might be or ideas for troubleshooting?

Thanks,

James:

From the E-Class Owner's Bible (Bentley Publishers, ISBN 0-8376-0230-0), which heads the problem "All E-Class":

"Driveshaft out of balance . . . if problem persists, install rear differential vibration damper, MB part no. 124 350 03 72 at rear subframe. Tightening torque 150 Nm (110 ft-lb)."

My Coupé's driveshaft was not out of balance (my mechanic reckons that it is so distinctively harsh as to be immediately recognizable) but there was what the Bible calls "a thrumming" in this speed range. I've had the damper fitted: a very heavy item that just slots in easily. It has severely suppressed, but not completely eliminated, the thrumming, but it is no longer a source of annoyance. I have not detected the problem in my turbo sedan.

You may want to check the centre bore if there is any adapter used.

I once had similar issue.

Hope it helps.

Thanks for responding. I gather from the Bible that the driveshaft is hollow, and with my limited technical knowledge I'd be grateful if you could clarify what you mean by "centre bore".
