Weird Noise When Turning !!

Hello fellow brothers,

Vehicle: 1988 300E
Odometer reading: 198,000 KMS, don't know how much it is in miles !!

Ok this is getting annoying now. At first i thought it would go away, but its not and keeps on getting louder and annoying each time. Not to mention, scares me too !!

What basically happens is that when I turn my steering wheel to the right, during a very slow corner, for example getting on to my driveway or getting into a parking spot. This weird noise comes up. I obviously cant tell you what it sounds like, but ...it kinda sounds like the metal frame of buildings when they are coming up, swaying in the wind. Or, an old see saw !!

I'm no Benz doctor, well not even a nurse...lol!! So all the Benz PHD's please do tell me whats going on and what course of action should I take? And what seems to be the issue that I seem to face.

Thanks

turn your wheel all the way to the right and then park. check your sway bar and the bushings to make sure they are in the proper place. and if they are not, you'll need to order another bracket to secure them from the dealer. which is like 5 bucks.

Sounds more like your ball joints to me. When I've needed them, the sure sign was a squealing noise during slow speed turns.

Xudeck,

Well, sounds like the lower ball joint to me as well. Actually I have just replaced mine 2 weeks ago, and I think your ball joint just need a new one which they are not that expensive cos yours 88 right? Well mine is 91 and they should be the same thing. But the previous owner just changed the whole damn thing to 94 sportline stuff , as a result, I need to replaced the whole new lower control arm which is quite expensive $379 each compared with the stealership $655. So, my billl was over a thousand bucks..ouch..it hurts but she is smooth as silk now when I turn. I think from 88-93 the ball joint is replacable but not on 94+, I really don't have a clue why MB does that.

Thanks for all the info guys. I dont think, it is the sway bar though, but I could be wrong !! Ball joints, sound more like metal rubbing against metal, but they were changed only a year ago 30,000 kms ago !! But yeah Ill look into that !!

By the way quiz, you never came to that BBQ meet in Toronto man !!

They had to change the control arm design for the upgraded front brakes in the later cars. The ball joint would not clear the new brake rotors. I found the control arms for $150 ea. on imcparts.com.
