Thanks

Same original paint as when I picked it up new in May 1988....just had it professionally detailed.
Result was so good that I'm holding off on the repaint for a while !

I just picked up a spare grille shell made of ABS....I'm going to color match it to the car with a gloss black grille insert....

Do a Photoshop and see how your grille will look color matched, you might be surprised how it will give the hood a sleeker look then the contrast.

Either way you will have a unique look

I'll be installing a Wald replica front spoiler painting it and the new bumper inserts the lower cladding color.
Also have euro headlights, removing the wipers and color matched blanking plates.
Also adding the later model insert between the tailights.

Not sure whose car this is, but this is the "color matched grille shell look" that I'm going to try !

i'm getting the wald joint too, but in my case i'm going to keep the lower cladding grey and paint the kit to match... hopefully it will look okay!

I knew there was something I liked about you

Most seem to think the contrasting cladding "dates" the earlier W124's....

I find it makes the vehicle stand out from the later "almost" body color matched cladding.

The original cladding came in many colors, but the grey seems to go the best with the primary colors, black, white and red.

Merc did the cladding in a matte finish and IMHO they thought it through.
Notice repaints with a gloss finish and the cladding sometimes appears a bit "wavy".

Still deciding on whether to keep the bumper inserts the textured black from the factory or paint them a clear coated matte gray.

paint them gray. Your car does look great, but 3 colors is a bit much, i'd keep it gray and red. When I resprayed my 400E I painted the cladding and bumpers gray, but in gloss, and damn if it didn't look 10x better than matte.

Thanks your comments.
It's the three colors from the factory....
So, for now I'll probably paint the bumper inserts as that's the direction I was leaning !
When I paint the complete car, the remaing cladding will be redone in the original grey, not sure if full gloss, maybe somewhere in between

I would like to color-match my lower cladding, but I've been told by a couple of body shops that my color shade (cream beige) is extremely difficult to match after it's seen 17+ years of sun. I'd rather keep my car dated-looking than spend over $1k on something that might look like ****.

As for the grille on your car, berti- I considered doing the same thing with my car, actually. A matte black finish over the grill. The thing I would've done if I were you would've been to fill the emblem holes (both sets) with bondo and sand it smooth, then paint it black for the sleek look.

But now that I look at it, I think the black finish might make the grille stand out a bit too much. I think if you still had the black bumper contact strips rather than the color-matched cladding, and maybe if your rims were flat black as well, it might tie together better. I admire your creativity though.

I love the rims, I think I have the same replicas except mine are only 8" wide.

All of us Seattlelites/northwesterners really should have a get together this summer.

my garage, probably...! i need to start searching for a decent body shop to spray the kit for me since i will be hopefully getting it in the not too distant future. i was planning to mount it myself to save some cash, we'll see how that goes. i try to do as much on my cars by myself as possible for personal satisfaction reasons too... almost stopped doing that when i tried to install the flip-out monitor, but managed to overcome the issues in the end!
but yes, if you know of a decent shop that would be able to match a kit with my current cladding, i would be grateful to you.

yes! i always noticed the 'wavyness', the panels look like they've warped a little bit... never realized that it was because of the glossy paint! another reason to try and keep my current color and finish

i personally really like the cladding, just seems more 'w124' to me... but if you color-match the impact strips on your doors, it might actually flow smoother with the kit, give it more of a 'shaved molding' look....
