Brake pads dash light, rotors?

hi guys,

this wknd i noticed that my yellow brake pads sensor light has been coming on occasionally...do you guys usually change the brakes right away?

also, i'm hearing more and more that these german cars require both pads AND new rotors each time. is this true? this is for my 1995 E320 Cabriolet w/ 77k miles.

lastly, if i need to buy new rotors anyways, how about buying some slotted or drilled ones? i realize that it's for a casual cruiser/convertible and with the stock wheels the discs are not visible, but for similar prices...why not?

thx for your advice.

i just had to replace pads when that happened. I didn't do it immediately after the light came on, but you should do it as soon as you can though. you can definitely feel a difference though once you do.

Don't forget to have the rotors machined. Your next set of brakes will last longer if you do have them resurfaced.

thx for tips.

norcal124...you know any good shops? where do you get your 124 serviced? it seems like most shops don't resurface anymore and just go the easy route to replace the discs.

p.s. i work in SF and live in East Bay.
thx.

You can take your rotors and have pep boys turn them as long as they are within specs. The only shop I take my MB to when I have to is located in American Canyon (next to Vallejo). The name of the shop eludes me but they guy specializes in jags, bmws, and mbs. Its a mom and pop type shop.

Best thing to do is install the ATE Power Disc Brakes matched to PBR Ultimate Ceramic Pads for most noticable difference. The ATE Power Disk brakes don't have the cracking problem which are prone to crossdrilled rotor, but they do have grooves cut into the surface in the shape of a star for better venting. They make a hell of a difference over stock, but only cost a few dollars more!

I just had my brakes redone... mechanic told me that it would be cheaper to just replace the rotors... Maybe I got duped, I dunno. But my brakes feel fantastic now.
