not sure if its similar to what could be wrong with yours, but a few different things could be wrong...on my brothers 92 300SE, he had to get the wiring harness replaced...just one possiblity, hopefully others can add to it

No, the engine wiring harness. That is a common cause of this problem. The part is about $850 DIY. I hope this is not your problem.

The ASR light is bad news. If the wiring harness has never been replaced then I would look at that first. The insulation is biodegradable and will crack with age exposing the wires. The part is exceptionally expensive however you can do the install on your own quite easily. It would take about an hour.

Before fear factor sets in, a little investigation will tell you if the harness has been replaced. First check all exposed connectors that go to temp sensors and other devices like solenoids etc. The harness tape wrapping will not go all the way to the connector ends. The colored wire will be exposed about 1/2 inch. Look for wire insulation cracking. Roll the wire gently with your fingers, it should not split or flake away. There should be no exposed copper wire strands or dread green corrosion evidence.

Mine clearly has basic black zip-ties all over securing the cable tie points. The factory harness was installed with ties but not shiny black zip-ties cut with diagonal cutters leaving sharp points. The best indicator is where the two large harness connectors enter the main modules behind the battery. The thin, black plastic connector covers are cut back a few inches where factory covers would not. It seems the replacement harness may not have included the connectors so they laid the cable down on the original multi-pin connectors and stuffed the ends with grey sealing putty.

This is what my replacement E320 harness looks like. Other installations may vary and include the large factory connectors.
