Tranny Issue

Hi guys! i drive a 91' 300D 2.5Turbo and lately i've notice that my tranny is not working very good like before, from first gear to second is perfect but sometimes it "stays" longer in second gear until it moves to third, sometimes it goes to 3500 rpm with a normal acceleration, then from third to fourth is perfect again...

I never changed my tranny fluid (i own the car for six months) i checked the trans oil and it has got more than it needs, like 2 centimeters above the highest level.

Should i be concern about the trans oil level?
Could the tranny problem be a vacuum issue or it has to with the oil level?

Thanks!!

I'm no expert, but I'd change the automatic-transmission fluid and get the level right. There is a specific procedure for doing this properly, which I expect is somewhere on this site (or elsewhere on the Web). Use the right stuff as per MB spec. And, above all, the approach to the job should be one of surgical cleanliness -- the autobox is a sensitive device.

I had a problem caused by a main dealer failing to refill the box with the correct quantity of ATF; a shortfall in that case, it produced alarming symptoms, and I can imagine that an overfill might do the same. That's when I quit main-dealer servicing, having paid them well over USD1000 for the 36k service.

Not to be insulting, but I'd like to check the obvious. Are you checking the fluid level with the car warm, idling, and on a level surface?

What color is the fluid?... pink, red?, or a dark brown or black?

The funny thing is that it works almost perfectly when the weather is warm (above 78 Fahrenheit)...

Sometimes the fluid can look good on a dipstick, yet look black in bulk after it's drained. It may pay to replace the transmission fluid - especially since the car is relatively new to you, and you don't know the maintenance history. It's a cheap and easy thing to do that may solve your problem.

Turn the Bowden cable adjustment 1 turn clockwise (inward) to decrease the throttle pressure. If that doesn't make a difference then put it back where it was and check the cold shift delay valve.
