Becker Radio Question

Hello all,
I have an 88' 260E which had a Becker 780 model Grand Prix stereo in it...for the theft control on the radio, it is hooked up to the alarm system and creates dashes if its removed while the alarm is activated. The weird thing is, my 260E doesn't have a factory alarm system. So my question is, why did it "self destruct" on its own. I currently have a pioneer stereo in it, but I liked the stock look on the Mercedes. I know that you have to have the unit sent away, but is there anyway for me to fix it? I am not too woried that I break it more because its useless for me at the moment.
Thanks!
Craig

sound slike the anti-theft built into the radio. you have to input the code when you re-connect it to unlock it... if you don't still have the code you might be able to maybe get it from the dealer with your VIN

I think the becker service center can crack the code for you if you can provide proof of owner ship.

I was under the impression from becker that I had to send them the radio and they would "unlock" it for me....but if its going to cost 100 bucks, I don't really want to revert from a MP3 player to a tape deck...

The 1988's, or at least my coupe, had no codes / anti-theft on the radio that I know of.

I believe the codes came along in later years.
My 1999 C43 requires code rentry even if power is lost/disconnected/dead battery, etc !

Becker Update

Found the orginal manual supplied with my 1988 300CE when new.

Quote:

" THEFT-DETERRENT SYSTEM

Mercedes Benz models equipped with the Anti-Theft Alarm System are also equipped with a theft-deterrent radio.
This feature is designed to dissuade would-be thieves from attempting a break-in.
If an effort is made to remove the radio from the car while the alarm system is armed , the alarm will be activated and the radio rendered inoperative. A series of dashed lines will then appear on the radio display.
The Anti-Theft Alarm System is armed whenever the car is locked with a key. "
Unquote

Unfortunately there was no code supplied as in late model cars to reset the radio....it might be trashed !!

How did you remove the radio with the doors locked by the key from the outside ?

Nope, I was driving the car one day and the dashed lines just appeared. I have looked, the car doesn't even have a factory alarm module. I would like to get the radio fixed, but if its going to keep doing this, there is no point.
