Unless you match the front brakes your balance is going to be way off. The rear suspension is also a hydraulic self leveling system that require plumbing beyond just the struts. Larger non stock wheels will be required to clear the brakes and rotors.

subframes may be different. coupe vs sedan
track may be different. 500E vs regular 124.

remember that the 500E had extensive modifications vs the regular 124. it was engineered to still look the same though.

Save your money, time and effort as the change over will not give you anything and probably slow you down due to the rear end gearing of the 500E.

Better to find a 3.27:1 rear from an early 260E or 300TE which will improve acceleration without any engine mods.

How much horsepower are you intending to add and how are you going to achieve it?

Stock suspension setup should be beefed up with better springs, shocks and swaybars for handling.

And don't forget new motor mounts !!!

I actually did a trail lineup run to see if everything lined up. It did .Your right about the SLS system im opting to bypass it as I may need to convert power steering pump and so on . I would have never attemted to do this conversion , however im getting the rear end dirt cheap .

Youngtimer
read rbycc's post, the swap might actully slow you down...

the only clear plus i can see from doing this is the better brakes, but i don't see how buying upgraded rotors, pads etc. for both front and rear would not be a better idea than this?

500E Signal Rot
Talk about a total waste of time and money. The 500e suspension is all R129 parts and the 500e was modified for all these to fit. A 2.82 rear end is going to net you nothing with your transmission gearing. Also consider that your existing gearing is better already. Like mentioned, a 3.27 rear end will give you better 0-60 times. As for the brakes, if you really want to do a upgrade, pick up the front/rear brakes from a 400e, they are direct bolt on items and won't require extensive modification like the 500e brakes would.

mercedes 1990 300ce
appreciate the input guys. Thanks . I work at a local speedshop. The engine has been replaced with a non mercedes unit and the car itself has received exstensive stiffening work to the subframe . Im currently working on the rear now and mercedes rears in general are new to me . One of the reasons I posted on this forum was for some valued input as to the power handling potential of the 500e rear versus stock. I apologize if the attempt itself sounds ignorant .But if it does by all means educate me . This car will basically be a track car . Power output will be in the range of 500-550 with 8lbs of boost . I would like to retain the independent setup as opposed to slopping in a live rear.

First 500E differential as pointed out several times to you will reduce your acceleration due to it's high gearing.
The W124 chassis was not designed to accept the SL type rear without much modification.

Let's start with what engine you are installing.
How much torque and at what RPM is it being produced?
Manual or automatic transmission.
Track car....straight line ???, road course ???

Stock rear is much stronger then you think, but a lot depends on the answers to the above questions.
