I want my de-chrome the grill suround and have the holes filled. Is de-chroming really neccesary? I have read a few threads that suggest yes. But so many people have painted grills that I am confused.

Dechroming is not necessary, but proper prep is critical.
You need to rough up the surface of the chrome to begin the process.
Steel wool or a 400 grit wet/dry paper usually will suffice.
Clean the roughed up surface thoroughly, especially if you use steel wool.
Use a quality acid etching primer.
Finish coat as normal.
Should hold up like any other body panel if prepped correctly !!!

yahhhh You need to rough up the surface paint will not stick to it well and the paint will run or look off in some places. i am going to have a long and hard road coming up for me soon. when i paint my car, grill and every thing on my car i know allot about body sanding and sanding period. i normaly use 200 grit paper to start and move up to 600 or in some rare cases 800 to 1000 grit there heard to get and you need to pay out the *** for that stuff but unless you work with alot of jewelry you will not need that kind of grit. 600grit paper you can buy at car paint places and 200 280 and all the way up to 4 or 500 you can buy at hard ware places. if you cant get it there then go to a car paint place hope i can be of some help to you.

here is some of the work i have doon if you would like to see.
along with this stuff i have made metal sculptures around 60 to 70 pounds and armor.

I would never paint over chrome. Even sanding the chrome is not going to provide a good surface for your paint. Spend the extra time and do it right.

yeah that is a good point. it is hard to do but im use to it. in shop class i spend a good 8 hours sanding and hammering things to make some cool. stuff but i still think if don right it looks sick. i dont really like chrome unless on a muscle car or a classic not to much of a fan.

Rio Nice work. Ok 2phast I agree I will be "doing it right" when I go back to texas. I am going to try it the wrong way for now. I am calling a body shop supplier in the Am to try and get the paint. I hope it will all work out.
