The car is moddable but its $$$ and the question is why? if you wanted more HP you should have started with a 500. Thier are a few things though that you can do that may or may not result in neglagable HP increase.
1. Run PREMIUM gas (93+ octante) and fix the ignition retard so you can utilize the extra power - search for the web for the info on this - thier is a resistor that calibrates the retard replace it with a diffrent one to dial in the setting - bonus points for using a rheostat and making it adjustable ( Do a write up for the rest of us
) Also search th web for Taurine - this will go well with the retard mod.
2. For minor money you can polish your intake and mabey add a cold intake pipe to the airbox - anything that helps the car breath better will net you HP - at least in theory. Your intake should match the ports on the head EXACTLY and make sure your gasket doesnt block any portion of the holes - real basic stuff here but thier is HP to be had - cheap if you can do it yourself - expensive if you screw up and have to get new parts.
3. Depending on your emission laws you may be able to get a more free flowing exaust - possibly removing the Cats and mabey a better flowing muffler - Do remember that a 3" exaust will probably do you no good as the engine will need some backpreasure. Big exausts on cars with Turbo's are a bennefit but too large on your car will just be silly - what ever you do dont put one of those coffee cans on it.
I would say that everything else i can think of involves seriously more money (500$) but should you want to do it, start with ECU (renntech), Turbo kit, forged internals, cams, dont forget about Brakes, suspension, swaybars. Just keep in mind this isnt a honda and you wont find parts on every tuner website and auto store, do your reasearch, take your time, and spend the money to do it right.

Range Rover Classic
You could turbo charge it on the cheep but it would require buying the parts on your own and fabricating the bits and pieces. Otherwise your next least expensive option would be a new car. The 500s and the 400s are fairly cheap at this point.

Seriously....you have a very basic engine.
Doesn't have a ECU that can be programmed.
Has Semi-electronic / mechanical fuel injection.
Has Distributor ignition.
Stock car as it stands was actually fairly quick in it's day.
You could probably purchase a 500E for the cost of installing twin turbos and a suspension that handles the increased power

They apply to electronic throttle control.
W124's are far from drive by wire with a mechanically operated throttle

well a 500e is out of my buget for the time being but yes those things you have put down are good ways of makeing some good hp. also if you go to a good muchine shop for motors and ask them about some specalty shops you could costom ourder soom good parts that will fit your motor and ad alot of bang for the buck. but i warn you prepare to brake out the money gun and start shooting money out like crazy to pay for that stuff. i plane to drop every thing in to my car that the 500e had motor and all and make it a 560e
i have a 260e and doing this should make a 560e R.Z.L costom dont ask how i came up with the number i dont know my self
it was a odd night of drunk slander and passing out in my car tell morning over by my house.

if you want to think that your mercedes is fast, go drive a 2nd generation 4runner, then hop into the mercedes....
Toyota 4runner = slow
mercedes = faster
well, thats just how I do it, plus its cheap

The OP and questioner of the sprint booster had a 86 and a 91 which are KE-Jetronic III and mechanical throttle.
V8's and 93 and later M104's with LH and HFM had an electronic throttle.
Should have made myself a bit clearer and not generalize, but was addressing the thread subject matter !
Thanks your input !
