The amount of paint a car will need will depend on if you plan to repaint all the door jambs. A gallon of base for a base/clear job should do the whole car inside and out with some left. A gallon of acrylic enamel would probably do it but not if you're doing jambs, and you'd be cutting it close.
Paint can be cheap or expensive, depending on what brand and type you buy. A friend of mine painted an old SEL with a gallon of Western enamel, the paint cost $40. Looked like it too. I've also had a bit of experience with Glasurit, which is the stuff that comes on Porches new (and possibly M-B, not sure what brand they use) A gallon of Glasurit base could cost $700+, and you haven't even bought primer or clearcoat yet.
If I paint the bottom half of my 300TE, I'll get a quart or so of PPG basecoat and some high solids Euro-clear, I'll probably spend a couple hundred on that. I can prep and paint it myself.
As for Maaco or Earl Sheib, you could have your car sprayed there if you prepped it all yourself. Bodywork and paint prep is what costs the most when you take your car to the bodyshop since it takes the most time. And the guys at Maaco do nothing but spray cars all day, so they'll be good at it, and they'll have a proper spray booth.
But whatever you do, DON'T use the paint they have there. Buy your own paint and give it to them if you're really serious about having them do it. They aren't going to be using any quality materials, as you can imagine, if they're only charging you $300 for a whole paint job.
And at that point, if you've done all the body and prep work, and you've bought your own paint, you may as well get in touch with a reputable body shop to have them spray the paint. It won't cost you as much as you think.

anyhow I managed to take a picture with my phone, this is the best I can do. In person it looks shiny and has very little orange peel effect that would come out with a nice power buff.
btw thats a nice BMW M5 behind me, we park together AWAY from the other nonsense that comes through our parking lot.
