94 E420 ASR Fixed? New problem?
I was wondering if I might pry into some genius.
I was recently having an ASR/limp-home mode problem on my 94 E420. I have been trying to eliminate what is not the problem, and finally replaced the stop light switch underneath the dashboard for the brake pedal.
I then took the car out for a spin, and hopped on the freeway, expecting the ASR light to come on and feel the limp home mode drop in. But instead of that happening, all of the dash lights in the gauge cluster lit up instead, then popped off when I used the turn signal, then back on again. I stopped the car, turned it off, restarted, took off, and the lights came on again, but no limp home mode whatsoever. So far.
Any thoughts to an explanation?
Mechanic told me all the expensive parts are in good shape.

Engine has 160k on it. Don't know if the wiring harness was replaced but I would assume so otherwise the mechanic would have pointed it out. Electronic Actuator also not spotted as problem area, seems to be running smooth.
Drove the car later on, and lights were on and then went back to normal during the drive. Still no limp home mode. Fingers crossed.
Input still desired for anyone who has a thought.

You really think so?
Car has appointment at Benz dealership next Thursday, 11/15, to have diagnostic codes read since import shops around here seem to not have the scanner old enough to be compatible with the car.
I'll live with the $90 fee if it can shed some light.
But alternator? I'll have it looked into, thank you.
Any other thoughts?

Yes, Alternator could very well be the main culprit, although have them check the Voltage regulator first, if not then go for the alternator.

Shadowgriffen,
I think you just saved my behind. I took the car up to my mechanic (as I noticed the heated seats and heater were no longer working, along with all the dash lights lit up) and he tested my battery and it showed that the car was running strictly off battery power. Quoted me at $369 for parts and labor, Reman alternator with a year warranty. I can't thank you enough for hitting the nail right on the head.

Alternator was replaced and for the first time, I enjoyed driving the car without any dash lights on. All problems appeared fixed, and they even got the Check Engine Light to turn off which had been on since I bought the car and was supposedly untraceable.
ASR light STILL COMES ON and car STILL GOES INTO LIMP HOME MODE.
No matter how much you buy for a girlfriend, she always asks for more.
Suggestions welcome.

Doug, the lights will come on as a GINORMOUS IDIOT light that the electonic system is at fault.
