it depends.
For example, my car uses H4 bulbs. I bought an 'HID kit' on ebay, that was plug and play. it plugged into my existing headlight wiring, and all i had to do was attach the ballasts to something in the engine bay, do some light modding of the rear covers of the headlights, and just put the bulbs in the housing. so now, I have HID lights. the problem is, i blind everyone on the road, because my headlights were not designed to use HID capsules. I aimed them to the ground, but I still feel too shy to run them most of the time.
Some kits now come with the little shield attached to the bulb to reduce glare, but they still produce glare.
The current headlights out there with projectors for our cars that you're seeing on ebay are not designed for HID, so they don't do too good of a job. the best solution is to retrofit an HID projector from another car into the headlight, like this fool:

https://mbworld.org/forums/e-class-w124/215749-enzo-s-projectors-installed.html

you can see that with the real projectors (his are from an acura TSX), you get the cutoff line, which means you're not blinding oncoming drivers. i'm looking at doing something similar to this, it will end up costing me ~$350-400 when it's all said and done, since i'll re-use the current ballasts i have and just get different bulbs that will work with the projectors I get.

The new silverstar ultras are supposed to put out 4100k, which is HID-like territory, I wonder how those would perform in these housings? probably look pretty sick, without having to do too many mods...

I currently have the silver star's...the 4100k...and they're definitely brighter than other cars on the road, but not like you'd expect...but if you dont plan to get HID or projectors....I'd recommend these for good quality light output

<EDIT> They make my stock fogs look yellow in comparison however

yeah, i was thinking on the lines of putting the ultras into the halogen projectors on the zorro-style headlights...

I may sell my hid ballast and d2s 6000k lights....the ballast are made by Hella for bmw and the bulbs are philips....I have these an a whole bunch of other parts i may sell because i just have tons of parts for my car that never get put on....I also have a set of 94-95 tail light lens and AMG tips from the e55 but i don't think they are real amg....

I have some projectors too to retrofit for these into anything...

just out of curiosity, how much are you looking to get for the ballasts + bulbs + projectors? Not looking to buy, but I am interested to know, if that's okay... you can pm if you don't want to put it out there...

lots of cars
lol...well i buy a lot of stuff for my car because I plan to put it on but that day sometimes never comes....like the side panels and side skirts i got...i also got some 94-95 headlights but i'm waiting to buy the hood....I have a storage room full of new parts for my car...i still have the oil pan i needed to change from like 3 years ago...

on prices, well?...i don't know...the condition of the stuff is good but not perfect. I'm going to test the ballast first before i sell them. I tested one with a 12v power supply but it didn't turn on at first. I guess it was the amps it was pulling from it because when i let it sit for a min it turned on right away.

If i was to sell all this stuff i would probably ask around $200 for the ballast without bulbs. I don't think the projectors are any good for HID because the pattern is not that nice but i'll throw them in for free. The tails i may keep until i get another set of crystal led tails. The tips if i don't get them put on soon i may just sell them for like $60 but they do have some scratches from being in storage for a LONG time...

you should be able to use an HID kit in those ebay projector lights, and will probably be better than putting the HID kit in stock lights. i don't have these lights though, so I am just assuming. if you search i think one of the guys on here in asia put HID's into these lights.
