serpentine belt

Does anyone know where I can get a belt that would fit my m103 3.0l if I were to take off the AC pump? Was there a model available without the AC? and if so would the belt fit mine? BTW it's a 1990. I am also conidering removing the radiator fan and wiring up the electrical fans with switches into the car - what type of resistor should I use to prevent melting the switches?

Guys have removed smog pumps on M104's and found belts that fit. Custom engine builders take string and route it around the new path, tension, mark and measure it. A good and willing parts guy can find the closest match from the measured length allowing adjustment.

The trick is to make sure the new drive path will work between other pulleys. Sometimes the missing component creates an issue that could wear or throw the belt.

I was surprised at NAPA when the counter guy said my belt also fits certain Chevy's and other cars. The width is not unique to MB.

i'm one of those guys that took out their smog pump and found a belt. i had to make like 6 trips to autozone but i finally found one that fit. the string idea works, then you just take the length of the string and buy a few belts a little smaller than the string. its a tight fit in there, so my string was a little loose resulting in loose belts until i found the perfect one.

Did you ever find out what the part number was or have a spare in case of belt failure again? If not, could you check your car and help those who have been searching for this mysterious part number. Thanks in advance for the help!

Wolfie;

Some people have removed the engine driven fan and replaced it with an inexpensive aftermarket electric with shroud($115), mounted straight onto the back of the radiator, with 'zip-ties'.
It is activated by the high-heat wire used by the old fan to engage the electromagnetic clutch.

Yen-hsen had that on his 16V that you saw in Birch Bay and has been running it for at least a year.

Good luck

Sorry no part number but i managed to do this on my own a while back anyway. I just went into the local auto parts store (napa would have the belts too) and had my belt with me and asked for a smaller one. It took ,me a few more runs to the store but i believe i ended up with a 36" belt, original 41" or so... this is an ac delete in a m103 btw

190e 16v:
When i deleted the ac pump i also removed the condenser (small radiator deal that mounts to the main radiator) and drilled out the brackets to mount the ac fans to the main radiator. I wired them up to a pair of switches just below my steering wheel. All I would have to do at this point is remove the clutch fan but idk if it would be worth the potential risk. Anyway I just use the two electrics as auxilary fans for when im in heavy traffic and they work really good. the only weird part is the fans won't turn on if i have the heat on at the same time

hopefully i will get to drive my car this weekend, since my injury i've been driving my moms loud, bouncy, stiff, uncomfortable, and slow honda crv because it has an automatic tranny.

I imagine you mounted the ac fans forward of the radiator, right?

If you deleted the clutch fan and mounted the electric fan BEHIND the rad, triggered by the same relay that activated the clutch, you should run no risks AND you will not have the parasitic power loss from the mechanically driven fan.
OR you could just remove it and monitor temps for awhile.

Good luck on that.

I finally did it, I had the smog pump removed and I used 6PK2145 (without a compressor) for the replacement on my 94 E320 (with a compressor 6PK2415). Many models are different depending on the accessories and the belt path, so for those who wish to experiement, I have attached a belt size reference document(go straight to the bookmark in the adobe file). Good luck in the future to anyone else searching the forum after this post, I hope this helps.

I also had to replace the idler pulley since pump ceased, it destroyed the pulley. I also had to remove the pulley from the air pump and leave it in place.
