alright i am a complete noob to the benz world im a Volkswagen guy myself i recently was given a 87 300e and i was wondering if it is even possible to lay frame or close to it in these things ... my jetta is currently 1 inch from laying sub frame on the ground ... my question is there any sort of coilover for these or the best lowering springs .... i hate using just springs but i will find one way or the other to get this thing sitting proper .... here is a shot of my jetta
Wheels - AMG Monoblocks from W210 E55 AMG (staggered)
Offset - I really don't know, I'll check soon.
Size - 18x8.5, 18x9.5
Tire size - 235/40/18 in the front, 255/35/18 in the rear.
Tire brand - Nexen
Ride height - Stock
Springs - Stock
Shocks - Stock
Bump pads - Stock/unknown. Never touched them
Rubbing/Scraping - If the car isn't moving, I have around 3 cm of clearance all around the tire. As soon as I'm on the road, I have significant rubbing issues. Driving slow so that body roll doesn't decimate my tires.
Fenders: Rolled. If after my springs/shock combo gets installed and I still have rubbing, I will definitely flare them.
Wheels Mercedes C Class 10 Spoke (Staggered)
Offset Front ET36 Rear ET30
Size Front 17x7.5 Rear 17x8.5
MB Part Front MER B66474270 Rear MER B66474271
Tyre Size Front 225/45/ZR17 Rear 245/40/ZR17
Tyre Brand Falken Ziex Ze-912
Ride height - unknown
Springs - Eibach Pro Kit
Shocks - unknown
Bump pads – Unknown
(sorry on car when purchased so can't help with specifics)
Guards not rolled or flared BUT have been worked out (method unknown)
Rubs at front on hard lock only.
Will bottom out crossing speed humps if not taken slower
Will catch front spoiler on slopes if not approached with caution.
On 1995 Cabriolet:
AMG Aero I's 17 x 8 et35, fenders rolled
Michelin Pilots 225x45 zr17
took some work - higher ET would have been better with 8" width rim maybe 38 to 40 would have saved a little fender work.
Hey there,
noticed that your trim is looking extra black and fresh - Even the hematite chrome trim around the windshield and door panels! Did you restore this? If so what materials/techniques did you use to do so?
My trim is greyish (plastic, rubber, vinyl) or faded gold brown (hematite) I even applied Wipe New to the plastic and rubber and that didn't quite get it to where it should be.
I've got a 94 E320 Coupe with the following:
Wheels: AMG Monoblock 18x8, ET 31 all around
Springs: H&R
Shocks: Bilstein Sport
Pads: Front #1, Rear #3
Tires: Front 215/35/18, Rear 225/40/18
Height (from ground to bottom of fender): Front 24", Rear 25.5"
The car is obviously higher in the back, will changing the Rear springs to #1 be enough to even it out? Or will I need to raise the Front a bit? Any advice will be appreciated.
Okay mate well part of your problem is an obvious one.
The difference in height of the front and rear tires/wheels is a lot more than you think.
Assuming they are 8 inch rims all round (doesn't matter much), I ran the specs through the rimsntyres calculator and it shows the following:
Your rear set up is 25.1" (637mm) tall from the ground
Your front set up is 23.9" (607mm) tall from the ground.
A difference of 1.2" (30mm) front to rear !!
So address the tyre height issue and the rear should sit back down nicely
Incidentally, the difference between 215 and 225 also contributes despite being the same sidewall profile with the 215/225 a 0.3" (8mm) difference with 225 being taller on those rims !

Mine is a 1995 E-420.
Wheels are 17x7.5 ET 35 ANZIO Visions in Matt graphite.
Tires now are 215/45R-17 V rate Pirelli Cinturato P7's
Ride height and suspension is stock and fenders have not been rolled or spaced.
No rubbing or other issues with the 215/45/17's.
First round went with 215/50/17's and although the books showed it should fit I had major clearance issues in the front both at the rear of the wells and at the top edge of the lip. It was particularly bad on the drivers side for some reason and I actually bent the lip turning into my driveway just after the install.
Here was the stance with the 215/50/17's and while i like the look it just didn't work for this car. I had a really weird bump steer thing going on at speed as well as the major rubbing issues in the front with this set up.
All of it went away when i went down to the 215/45's. Plan to roll the edges and space the fenders at some point just for insurance but so far no issues at all with rubbing on this set up.
Photos of my cars stance with the 215/45/17's.
Both ride and steering response are light years better with this set up from the tiny stockers. Car in particular was big time tail happy in the damp with the no traction Hankook H rated 205/60/15's I had on the 6.5 8 holes to the point of being dangerous. It was very unpredictable while accelerating because as it came up on the cams say on a wet freeway on ramp it had a nasty habit of suddenly breaking the tires and getting instantly sideways without warning. Those issues are now completely gone with this new wheel tire set up.
Ok, ran into a snafu, not happy leaving well enough alone I bought some near pristine 17" C36 AMG Aero II wheels. Staggered, 7.5" in front 8.5" in the rear.
I did the AMG mod to the front fender so its a non issue.
I went to fit the rims on just to see the clearance, the rear wheel is nearly flush with the fender edge, that means on a bump the tire will rub and maybe even wrinkle the fender....which would be mega bad. My car (94 coupe) is lowered with H&R springs. Am I screwed or will a rear fender roll make this work?
I hope to run 225 45 17 in front and 245 45 in the rear. I can also run 40 series but would rather have a little more meat so as not to perpetually have to straighten my rims every time I take the car out. Thanks in advance.
Well got it rolled. Front fenders came out "ok" rear came out perfect. I am not overly concerned about the front however since I am getting the whole front clip repainted. I am loving the better performance these new tires are affording me!
