wheel bearing?

so quick question. i hear a droning sound coming from the back of my car, get louder as the speed increases. doesnt seem to change with gear changes. it makes my car sound kinda like a plane or loud vacuum cleaner so im thinking its either teh differential or the wheel bearings in the back. a friend of mine had a problem with that sound on his crap saturn, turned out to be bearings. what do you guys think? will application of some bearing grease quiet it up?

Jack up each wheel and slowly spin it. If the bearing is bad you will feel It. Also listen for what sounds like gravel in the hub. Fronts are easier to replace than rears, FYI.

Yes, it is possible to be fooled into thinking that you have a bad rear wheel bearing, when the bad bearing is truly in front. Though it's more common to mix left and right noises.

I've written plenty on servicing front wheel bearings. Search at mercedesshop.com using my name and some proper keywords, such as "bearing" and "preload". I may even have something on this site.

Greasing a bad wheel bearing is like a 70 year old chain smoker eating a salad. It isn't going to do much for you at all. Just locate the bad bearing and have a new one pressed in.

why is it necessarily a bad bearing? cant it just be in need of greasing?

If the bearing is making noise - it's too late, it needs to be replaced. GEDagget is correct, grease will not quiet (and is not a solution to) a noisy bearing.

lots of cars
That sounds like two hours at $100/hr... yes, it's about right...with parts you'll end up at about $300...They have to have a special puller/installer for it so i hope they don't try to remove the wheel carrier and press it out. They gotta remove the axle too so it's not a pretty job and if your not a DIY'er I would just pay and get it over with.
