Steering issue 94 e320?

I have a bit of play in the steering on the highway so I put the car up to check it out. The tie Rods are perfect and the ball joints are solid. If the steering is turned all the way in a right hand turn the steering is tight (no play in the wheels) if I turn the wheels to a complete left hand turn the drivers side Wheel assembly has almost 2 inches of play (really not good) I checked out the linkage and it is not moving or shifting abnormally all the way up to the main shaft that comes out of the steering unit. Has anyone ran into this and if so is it a matter of replacing the steering gearbox assembly as I suspect?

Thanks

Maybe it's out of adjustment. Check out this document. I could have sworn I replied to this before...

Shdoug. This is sweet. Where do you get the diagrams from. Is this part of the CD sets I keep reading about. I know exactly what I will be looking at now. Do you know if they sell the parts to rebuild these units.

Thanks a ton.

You mean you're tired of driving the bus? I asked this exact question to another member with a sweet steering wheel. I'm drawing a blank but he had a white coupe that he sold. Help! What is his name? When I remember his name I'll search and see what he said about removing it.

Found the problem

The problem is in the steering gear box. Long story short there is a couple of gears in there and they are worn out. FYI I found the part remanufactured at the following link for $325. Not too bad. http://www.mercedessteering.com

Bjay51d is his name. I haven't seen him around for a while. He had an awesome wood steering wheel. You might be able to PM him, but I thought he told me he just took his wheel off and didn't worry about it. The sensors that detonate the charge are not in the steering wheel so removing it should not be a problem. Some say that after this many years the air bag won't even work but I would not trust that.
