Help Specs for E 220 W124 Tourer/Estate
Hi,
I need help to satisfy myself whether I'm being offered a genuine spec car.
Model: E220 W124 Estate/Tourer/Wagon
Year: 1994
Seller: non-MB dealer. [He's a Suszuki/Honda/Opel dealer.]
Seller tells me that the engine is a '2000cc' engine which may be simply ignorance on his part or ...
There are no MB documents.
Odo reads 120k miles.
The car appears clean externally. Carpetting and pedals look 120k miles. Cloth seats however are well worn.
I have been searching without success for on-line spec data for W124 E220. (All the best data I've found refers to bigger engined cars.)
Can anybody direct me to an on-line source of reliable spec data for this model or relaible general data?
Any other 'caveat emptor' tips also welcome.
I would prefer to have some solid information before I visit this dealer again so that I can quickly satisfy myself as to whether the car is 'genuine' before investing further time, effort and possibly money in checing out this potential bargain.
Thanks for your help.

Hi,
Thanks for responding. You're right of course but what I had in mind was some sort of data sheet giving basic data on standard MB badged as E220 in Wagon/Estate/Tourer body format.
My main source of anxiety at the time was that the dealer had asserted even when queried that the engine capacity was 2 litre - whereas I had expected a 2199 cc petrol engine.
However these events occurred on Saturday last:
: I spoke with a different salesman at the dealership who was able to provide a fair amount of documentation and was happy to confirm that the engine was the original 2199 cc engine.
: I obtained the VIN and had it confirmed by MB dealer.
: Myself and the real prospective driver, my wife, both drove the car more extensively and concluded that what I had on a short drive suspected was a wheel tracking issue is more likely to be a bearing issue.
As far as we are concerned the last turned this potential dream car (for us) into a 'walk-away'. At 8950 euro's sought for 102,000 miles with clean bodywork etc it had seemed attractive but any suggestion that it may require significant mechanical work renders it unattractive as we need a drive-away.
So for now I'll be bowing out of MB world and fading back into the ghostly world of MB world wannabes/dreamers.
To all you more fotunate sob's: enjoy! safe motoring! bfn.

1989 300TE - 1994 E280
aww thats a pity.. The 220 estate is indeed an excellent car, with a very strong body, a frugal smooth engine and has alot of features that not even newer cars have. I had a 1986 230TE a lil while ago and that car was excellent. The only reason I dont have it anymore is because I was in a major accident which possibly saved our lives. A car with mileage and age of the one you saw will possibly require some type of repair but not necessarily. No one can tell me that new cars dont go bad either coz ive heard many stories. I think you should get urself into a Benz at the next oppurtunity, and if u look after the car, you'll never look back. I started with a 1975 280 not all that long ago and i was worried too. But it started everyday and the only thing that went wrong in 6 years of ownership was the altenator. I think you should look some more. Im sure there are many like that around and if money can buy, get a E280 or E320 wagon or even a 300TE. It uses a bit more fuel but its a much more effortless drive. Hope this can help a bit.

I have a 1994 model E220 sedan which has 150000km's or approx 70000 miles on the clock. The car has a full MB service history. I have been very impressed with the car, and found it to be smooth, economical and very reliable.
Im not sure about the warranty obligations of car dealers where you live, but here the buyer is given a 3 month 5000km warranty for any defects found which must be fixed by the dealer.
I discovered with in the first month that on a hot day in heavy traffic, the engine temp rose just beyond half-way, and i was fortunate that the dealer immediately had the head gasket replaced. I havent had a problem since.
I believe the E220 W124 is a model which is sold in only a few selected countries. The motor is only 2199c and is not exactly built for rapid acceleration, but it is far from slow or sluggish.
If you like the car, get it checked over by a Benz specialist and if the problems are minor, negotiate the price or buy the car subject to the problems being repaired frst.
