How to fool the airbag?

I am about to retrofit airbag in my '92 300TD Turbo.

I have 3 sets of cable harness. 1 for 1x airbag and 2 for 2x airbag.

I currently only have 1 airbag for the steering wheel, and none for the passenger. The best option would therefor be to mount the cable harness for 1x airbag and be happy. Maybe I'll do this.
The other option is to mount the cable harness for 2x airbag and just install a resistor into the plug for the right airbag. That way it will work, and I will be able to install the 2nd airbag when / if I come across the parts I need.

My question is : What shuld be the value of the resistors to plug in where the 2nd airbag shuld be?

Why do you want to drive around without the airbag?

It is a safety device, that I really don't think you shuld remove from the car.

The lamp will be lit if the airbag is not connected.

SRS light will stay on. I have a new steering wheel for my car and the stuff for the horn and airbags don't match. So, now that I'm ordering the stuff that I need, the car constantly has its SRS light on and no horn.

Just unplug the bulb mate if you are ditching the airbag anyway!

I must admit I have a hard time understanding the problem. The bulb shuld be underneath the speed indicator, right in front of you when you drive the car.

Just take out the instrument cluster and disconnect the bulb.

But what happens when you slam into something and the charge detonates? Wouldn't that blow the steering column apart or something?

Hmm.. Touchwood on that.. But I thought the explosives are actually in the airbag itself? All the car does when it hits something is that it sends a signal to the airbag unit that triggers the explosives?

No idea.

Berti. The bulb thing is really easy. It will take 5mins tops. 10mins if you're a virgin at it LOL

Hey.
Well, you will need something like this:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Dash-...spagenameZWDVW

I made my own from clothe hangers.. Just bent them with pliers..
Basically you insert them at the sides of the cluster (the more vertical bit next to the AC vents). Put them in deep (say 5 6 inches) then move it around to get a good grip. Each of the hooks would have to pointing towards the cluster horizontally. Get a good grip. Then gently wiggle it so the cluster comes loose. You might just be able to unplug the SRS bulb without disconnecting any other cables (e.g. speedo).

I'm sure there's a write up somewhere cux I learnt it myself on this forum. Not sure if it's the W124 or W210 though

The majority of airbags in W124 cars, if never replaced, are dry rotted and won't work upon impact.

Air bags have date codes and an operating life expectancy

Years ago dealer disconnected mine and removed the indicator bulbas the cost of replacing was outlandish.

Do I worry about not having an airbag?

Not really...I drove for many years before airbags, still have vintage cars that never had an airbag and the "safety features" or lack thereof doesn't prevent my enjoyment

I know. At first, they had a 10 year life expectancy, but AFAIK this has been extended to 15 years, also for older airbags. Anyway, I'd rather have an "too" old airbag than noone at all.

So what's in that silver canister attached to the steering column in the engine compartment on most American cars? I though that was the explosive device and the steering column was what carries the force to the airbag. Or does MB do it differently?

Noone does it like that.

The airbag and the explosives is in the steering wheel.

I see, you are correct. It's all in the airbag. So remove the steering wheel, pull the SRS bulb, and everyone's happy.

Um, nobody mentioned caution on removing the airbag as it can detonate. Mis-handling wires or the charge pack could make for an unpleasant bang.

At least place a towel on the seat to help collect fluid should you wet your pants.

Disconnect the battery before working on the airbag.

I was just told that 2,2 ohm is the correct value to make the system believe there is a airbag present.
