Got ICE?

Hey
Has anyone got a flip up DVD headunit in their 124s?
I was wondering if the AC wood would prevent the screen from flipping up and thus leaving it in an awkward position.. Cux I wanted to get a DVD one last xmas and the ICE shop told me it wouldn't work, so I settled for a Pioneer instead.. Moved from JVC.. I still want the DVD unit though..

Any ideas are welcome

I had a flip up in mine before it got stolen. It worked fine with the controls and whatnot. Just make sure you get one with a thinner screen or else it may not be able to come up all the way and be at the right angle for you.

My Alpine unit w/DVD in trunk works fine. I was surprised at the flexibility the monitor has...it can be set at several distances from the head unit, so it can work even with a 1/2 inch larger indent than our dashes have- easily.

When it comes out it blocks the temperature adjustments, but there is a button -top right- on the monitor which temporarily tilts the screen forward for access to those adjustments.

Also, even though it is a touch screen, I often drive without the screen, so it looks like a normal head unit. Head unit, screen not pulled out:

(I know, should have cleaned her before taking the shot!)

Cheers to both of ya!!
RHW do you have a pic of the screen opened? I'm really interested in how the unit can extend the screen like perhaps 2inches out before flipping it up..
Do you think any other units will work? I'm more of a Pioneer guy now

Sorry, that car is garaged 60 miles away or I'd snap a few shots.

The monitor is on a pair of rails, which slide out to allow the upward pivot. There are multiple preset positions and I use the shortest one, so there is PLENTY of room even if the dash was deeper. (that surprised me)

Would love to see the double din set up- I am playing with the Sportline now and that has been suggested.

-------

The DVD player, amp, crossovers etc are located behind this panel in the trunk.

Cheers.
I'm looking into a more subtle approach so I won't be considering a double DIN setup. The DVD idea sounds good and I'll sure look into it.
I've seen people incorporate the comand unit into the W124 too but fitment seems a bit hmm, imperfect..

I have a kenwood pop out dvd player, it comes out quite far, pops open and then moves back, and the distance it stays out is adjustable.

I'll see if I can find some pics tomorrow, not sure if I have any though.

I don't and never WILL understand why you'd want DVD players and TV's in a car that YOU are driving all the time. In a limo or a mini van for the kids, sure, cause it gets use, but in a car? Entertainment for passengers seems silly.

To answer the question, I have a flip out screen in my CE and it works fine. It wouldn't work in my 95 Cab so I had to put a unit with a small built in screen in that one. I also have flip out screens in most of my other cars and they work well.

Mine has only ever been used for the Nav function. I buried the player in the trunk with the Alpine nav disk in it.

I have a visor lcd and a in dash dvd player...I don't know about you single guys but when the wife tells you to stop really quick at the store it usually takes about 10-15 min. I just turn down the visor and put a dvd for my son while we wait...

I've parked my car on the street with the doors open and no one has ever tried to steal my visor tv because they don't even know it's there...

Cheers guys.
So basically it will work.. I thought about the 4" small screen thing before but that might be a bit silly for the purpose I need the screen for.
And hmm, I kinda want the screen just for a change, nothing about watching it. Traditional headunits are getting far too boring. Whenever I get in the W124 it feels weird without a screen LOL but that's just me..

I'd recommend this unit to anyone that has a good use for it. I'm running 2 amps, and it can control each one separately. I'm installing monitors in the head rests as well pretty soon!

i had one until a week ago. i thought it would be cool, but i never used it! I used to burn music videos, but it was more of a pain than anything, so i just sold it and ordered a normal head unit. i was going to go with a carputer for a while too, but it will end up being the same thing, never needing it most of the time. i'm using the money i'm saving to buy a portable gps now.
RHW's unit loks good, the one i had was a cheapo unit, and i could not have it sitting all the way back in the dash. I had to have it pulled out in line with the ac controls. it looked okay, but that was the only way the screen would come out.

edit: i bought a blaupunkt (figured it was time i had something german in the car!), that can use memory sticks so i don't have to burn off mp3's any more, and also has built-in bluetooth, and comes with the mic and everything. i was up til 3am comparing different options and this was the best bang for the buck. half the price of the flip-out screen i was looking at, so i'm happy!

Whoa! Tell me more about your Blauplunkt. I have a new Premier unit, but it looks so out of place.

What model do you have?

Cheers everyone.
My car is running 2 amps, 1 multi-channel and the other mono, totalling a max of 4250W, so I hope I would have a good use for it. I'm not quite sure about adding more screens to my car like P-my-ride so I probably wouldn't do it.
Zed, I know exactly what you mean. I know I will end up not having much of a use for it but it's going to annoy me until I actually get one, hate it, ditch it, and get a proper head unit. I'm using Pioneer now, one of its 08 models, just got it not long ago but I guess I can somehow sell it. I hook my iPod up with the thing to play MP3s.
I have V1 hardwired and portable GPS in my Smart so that's OK
As regards the iPhone, I gave it 2 chances. I bought one, hated it, sold it, bought another, hated it again, sold it again LOL
