Engine drain plug on 103

I have a coolant leak on my 1990 300E from one of 2 drain plugs on the passenger side on the engine, a 103. The leak is from the front plug, smaller of the two. Does anyone know what this plug is for and is it OK to remove it? The rear plug is to drain the coolant...I think...it has the nipple to attach a hose.
Thanks and..Oh... where can I get a schematic of this engine showing all the bits and pieces? I have an online subscription to Alldata and it is useless...don't waste your money.
Thanks Again
Brian
