Fan stupidity?

Fan stupidity?
I have what will most likely turn into a stupid question.
I am attempting to remove the fan clutch from my '94 E420,everthing i've found in a search is reference to six cylinder motors.
I have crammed everything in my garage in between the shaft and the pulley bolts,my only result being bent tools.
Any suggestion or advice or social ridicule is more then needed

well i tried to post some pics that would help but the dumb computer won't let me, sorry. I had the same deal as you and basically the only way to do it is to have an MB mechanic's tool box at your disposal. My boss had the special "wrench" that slides into a slot on the back side of the pulley and stops it from rotating so you can get it off. I'll try again later to post up those pics

I just re-read that the six cylinder references were no help to you but here are the pics anyway, hope they help! you may be able to make your own tool for this if you have a thick clothes hanger and bend the end of it at a sharp angle, or a piece of 1/8" or 3/16" rod may work as well. I think 1/4" will be too large.
