E300D 2.5 Turbo Diesel Engine Rebuild

Unfortunately, my parent's E300D 2.5 Turbo has encountered a problem with the engine. The dealer is telling us that the engine has to be rebuilt, with the engine costing 12k and an additional 5k for labor. However, before scrapping the car and buying another or going ahead with the rebuild, I want to know whether the dealer is marking up the price. My question is simple:

Is 12k a reliable estimate for the engine?

Thanks.

Not worth it my friend. You can find very low mileage W 124 or even W 126 models for less than what the dealer wants to rebuild the engine.
Other options would be to find a non dealer that rebuilds diesel engines.....

Why can't you buy a used motor and have a mechanic do a compression test?

Are they out their F@cking minds? 12k to rebuilt an engine? 5k for labor? WTF!

What dealer is this?

How much would you sell it?

Rebuid cost

A full rebuild on that car should cost you no more than $3000.00 from a reliable independent shop. Did the dealership give you a list of what actually needs to be done? (I would be interested to see it) What is the engine doing that they are saying it needs a full rebuild. I find it hard to believe that the car needs $12000 in parts even if they are genuine Benz parts it seems completely unbelievable that it would need that much in parts. Add on top of that 50 hours or so of labor and it sounds like they are jacking you up. I have priced out my m-104 full engine rebuild and the parts even from Benz only came to about $1800.00 and non-Benz parts came top about $900.00 and that includes having the head reconditioned. The Diesel is more simple than the gasoline engine and in turn should cost less not more. Bottom line go get some other quotes from independents. It should be $2500 - $4000.00 Tops.

Well this is what happened guys. The guests that were using the car filled petrol in it instead of diesel. Now petrol combusts faster that diesel, resulting in the cylinder 1 and 4 moving in tandem. This resulted in a cracked crank shaft, broken pulley, and a variety of other problems. I'm not a mechanic so I can't exactly elaborate what was said but this is my understanding of it. Basically, the engine just ripped itself apart from the inside. The mechanic at the dealership said we could repair the car for around 3-4k if we got an engine from a third party without a warranty. Now for 3-4k, we could easily buy a used 190D diesel. However, my parents have decided not to get the car fixed as it was just an extra third car. When the time comes, they might buy a new one, but for now they will write it off.

Thanks for all the help.

It doesn't take 4k worth of work to install a used engine. Any mechanic should be able to install a engine diesel or not. Are you going to sell the car?

Too Bad your not in Illinos or I would take the car off your hands for and do it myself. Bummer to see one go that can be easily repaired (relative I know).
