W124 Console Lighting - Help!

Hey Guys and Girls,

Bit stuck with this one. Recently fitted a new CD/Radio and four new console window switches while I was at it. All good, except I've lost all instument lighting, except the two main lights for the instrument cluster. (ie. all window switch lights, vent control lights, AC and climate dials, transmission light etc, etc. ) Fiddled with all fuses in main box and they seem fine. All other accessories, lights, etc are working properly. Is there another fuse somewhere that is associated with the console lighting? BTW - the rheostat for the dimming has always been inoperative, and only works in the fully on position, but this was the case before this drama.

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Cheers, Jamie

PS: Apparently some models have an additional fuse on the back of the instrument cluster. My model doesn't (1986 300E).

Have you tried turning your dimmer switch to the right?
Dimmer is same as odometer rest....

Hi There RBYCC, thanks for the reply. Unfortunately it isn't the dimmer, it only works in the fully 'on' position, but this was the same before the other console lights went out.

My rheostat does that sometimes, but sometimes to get my interior lights back I have to tap it/push/pull/fiddle until things turn back on. I hate that thing, it needs replacing.

Hi Saijin, no, not the rheostat. Had a good play with that as well and no luck. This is driving me mad! Regards, Jamie

Have you tried sinking in the original radio to see if its the new head-unit thats causing trouble? Perhaps a wire was cut or disconnected in the process?

w124 console lighting (etc.)

Hey Jamie,

My '95 w124 E300 has the same problem... in fact the only dash lighting that works are the two lights that shine on the instrument cluster. Nothing else lights up at night inside the car. My reostat does seem to work for the cluster lights. I'd love to know if you (or anyone else!) has any suggestions. I've fiddled with and cleaned my fuses under the hood to no avail. Furthermore, the front radio speaker is intermittent, the cruise control has only worked once, and the intermittent wiper setting is, er, intermittent.
