Question 95 E320 Wagon Transmission Query

Hi All. I have a 95 wagon with ASR and 81,000 miles. It has the extended Starmark for another year or til 100,000 miles.

When the engine/transmission is still cold after starting the car, the transmission shifts very roughly, almost a "BUMP" coming from the rear end b/w 2-3, 3-4. After warming up, it goes away, and I never have any other problems. I've had the dealer look at the transmission but feel that because it's not been cold and hasn't done it there, they haven't looked too hard.

This is my 5th 124 car and my favorite, plus i'd like to get starmark coverage if there's a problem. DOes anyone have any advice/recommendation on what it could be-how to convince dealer to service/replace?

My dealer is great-I tell him over the phone that my wife's heating element in her seat is bad, and he orders it to have on hand when I bring in the car-so it's simply a matter of helping to ID the problem!

Thanks!

My car does that too, but I think it's due to the cold start delay in the transmition so that the engine heats up quicker. After about 2 minutes of driving it stops and the engine is at normal temperature. If it was ruining the transmition there would be a bad sound associated with it.

My E320 did the same thing until I switched over to synthetic tranny fluid. Now it's smooth as silk hot or cold. By the way a delayed 2 to 3 shift is normal until the engine temp. goes above 60'C. This is to help speed the warm-up process of the converter.

Same thing?

Need help here, I think it's related. I have a 95 E320 wagon wiht 132k on it. Lately, reverse seems to take its sweet time engaging. On a cold start it will act a bit ilke its in neutral, at times it will "shimmy" before catching, other times it will "shake" then engage squealing the tires! After warm up (hot) it has less problems i.e, shake and shimmy but is still sluggish engaging. I should mention that once it is in gear it runs fine. No problems with any of the forward gears. PS its an automatic.
Any ideas?
Thanks
Chris

Mine does both the slow engagement and the harsh shifts when cold, actually for about the first 15 minutes of driving. In another thread (https://mbworld.org/forums/e-class-w124/81637-transmission-shifting.html) everyone says the delay means the tranny is "on its way out". I'm hoping for another 35,000 miles out of it.

Thanks!! Lots of good information on the thread suggested. Im going for the chaepest route first (checking the fluid) then the flush and change. If that doesn't work I may have to part the car out
