300te failed N.Y.S. inspection

1989 300te...failed New York State Inspection...Hydrocarbons too high (HC)...1.11gpm, limits 0.80.
I have no idea where to start. I have regular fuel in the car, does that matter? I have 30 days to get this thing up to snuff...

Check your fuel mixture? Thermostat? Fuses, cat, exhaust, fuel system cleaner, air filter. Does it idle rough? That's where I'd start.

same here start with cheap fix parts and work your way up from there to the big $$ parts. i know i don't feel faint when behind my car anymore
but there is still a hint of some thing. but i have a sweet smell from my car most the time. i run 92 in my car

Did you have the car up to operating temp? A long time ago, a tech told me to run the car hard for 25-30 minutes and get the cats HOT! This is supposed to help emmissions....my old 300CE never failed emmissions when I did this first.
