Check the car's history, if not available ask yourself why. Check the numbers of preowners. Check for accidents!!! Check for signs whether the mileage is right. (check pedals, scratched windshield, used up seat covers, steering wheel tells also stories about the real mileage. Check for corrosion especially lower doorpanels inside, car jack pipes behind the plasic cover, the inside of front fendors (under the hood), rear wheel arches.
Check for oil losses through the head gasket, oil losses of the powersteering, check A/C function. Have cylinder compression check done. Have someone professionally check the auto transmission.
if all this seem ok go for it. But the most expensive things to fix I discribed are A/C, transmission, head gasket and foul comprssion.
