Temporarily Disable Check Engine Light?
Is there a way to temporarily disable the check engine light from coming on besides disabling the battery?

take the car to any shop that has a diagnostic OBDII scanner, they are most of the times willing to shut it off if you want. some charge tho for diagnostic, maybe tell them you just want them to erase the codes, maybe they wont charge you for a full diagnostic
BUT Some autoparts store also give a free diagnostic such as autozone and advanced autoparts, not sure if they will turn off the light though. I actually think they have a policy against it.
EDIT: just noticed that your car is a 95 I think OBDII is just for 96+ (autoparts stores also I think only carry OBDII) your going to need OBDI any small shop that runs computer diag should have it
or just do the battery trick

Where and how can I do that?
I tried removing the instrument cluster in the past to remove the bulb but I couldn't get it to come out of the dash. Is there a fuse for that light or something? or maybe I should disable the entire instrument/light for the instrument cluster?
Oh and I'm just trying to find out so I can smog my car. lol

95 e320...sold the rest
My check engine light has been on for almost 3 weeks, and nothing is wrong? Another thing, the yellow light for a missing light comes on periodically, and I don't have a light out?

Unknown at the moment. ![nix](https://mbworld.org/forums/images/smilies/nixweiss.gif)
It comes and goes since a few months after I bought the car and it's been running fine however.
Now I'm curious as to how I can disable the diagnostic "module"

that's weird... would have been if you could read the codes to figure it out, but if it keeps going away that's just strange...
i would pull the bulb though, if you could find someone to help you get the cluster out...

Last time I recently hooked up the car to the Star Diagnostic there was one minor problem but I forgot what it was specifically.
I wonder if you can temporarily disable the instrument cluster entirely? or just the warning lights. I haven't been able to check yet - I've been in the office all day.

If you are trying to do smog then the light has to come on for start up and then go out.
To remove the cluster you have to disconnect the speedo cable from the rear of the transmission to give the cable slack.
The diagnostic module is most likely behind the Instrument cluster and down a little.
If you just need the code cleared to get through emissions then go to the diag. terminal by the battery on passenger side under hood. There is a button. Push it for 2-3 seconds and count the blinks. This is the code. Then immediately push the button for 8 seconds and code will clear. Must do this after every code one at a time. When the light blinks once no codes are present.
cycle the key and go get your emissions.
good luck.

Just put a piece of electrical tape over it. Or if you really wanna get technical, print out a picture of it with the light off so the words are still there.
oooorrrr.
Pay the smog shop an extra 10-20 bucks. Just go to a smaller shop and talk to the guy. I got mine passed with the smog pump bypassed and a failed gas cap.

If you have a 16pin diagnostic module next to your battery that looks like this:
![](https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v320/chinster20/my%20car/Picture002.jpg)
Hold that button next to the 2 (The quick diag button) for 10 seconds, with the battery turned fully on, but no engine.
Resets the CEL computer and light is gone. However, it turns back on every 5 key cycles if you have an ongoing problem. A nice temporary tip.
I'm surprised none of you knew of this.

Most car selling thieves will simply pull the IC and disable the check engine light bulb!!
What you read or thought you read was not applicable to cars W210 and older. The W140 USA model had the under hood 16 pin diagnostic connector with push button which if you knew what you were doing you could manipulate the CEL!
What's you issue--are you trying to cheat someone and turn off the CEL or is someone trying to screw you!!
