UPDATE:

Ok so today, I replaced the BLACK nasty K&N with a new OEM style filter, put the date in my calendar and will replace it every year (dont drive lots anyway). Done.

Next, I noticed my car DOES have an MAS black and silver unit posted above and no fuel filter relay. I will source one after I try the ovp swap and new plugs and wires.

Plugs: My car has H9DC0 Bosch non resistor units in it right now and I don't know what is considered bad condition so I've posted a pic.

Also my 5th plug innard came out while removing the plug wire from the plug. Is that a bad thing?

YNV, can you get me 6 or 12 new H9DCOs? When could you ship those bad boys out to Vancouver V6B 1K3

As long as you didn't damage or crack the wire it is no big deal just slide the insulation boot back down over the wire end and you should be fine. Some people dab a bit of silicone on the plug and so that when it is time to remove the wire it doesn't sieze up too badly.

Plugs look good, I think. Dry, with light brown deposits, looks like your engine has no serious problems. Perhaps the middle one was running hot - hard to tell from the photos, though, especially the beautifully composed soft focus artsy, one. Couldn't resist, could you?

Perhaps someone with more knowledge than me, can see more?

Very "green" of you with the filter, too.

lots of cars
I don't think you have a ignition problem but a fuel delivery problem. Your car does have a fuel pump relay and it's the one in front of the klima relay. You might want to change the cap and rotor and also check the wires. The fuel distributor is going to be your problem and you can find a good used one on ebay.

I'll check on the plugs today...

Thanks YNV. I have a MAS in my car, not the fuel pump relay separate from others as in the older W124's. I am going to do a fuel mixture check first and OVP swap too. They did the EHA in late '06 and Cap and rotor late last year too. I am looking into new wires. Any recommendations for brand?

Possible but tranny issues don't cause stalls, do they?

First check your battery voltage with the engine off and running.
Check the alternator voltage at the regulator with the engine running.
The antiquated engine management is extremely sensitive to low voltage and can cause many erratic and hard to trace starting and running problems.
In the area of the battery and the OVP you will see a whole bunch of wires grounded to the same point.
Remove these wires and clean up the area before reinstalling to assure the best ground connection.
No consistent grounds at this point will give erratic running.

Looking at the pix of your plugs, I would venture to say that your AFR is where it should be.
No need to mess about with any air fuel ratio adjustments.

Do the OVP swap and see what happens.
Inexpensive fix that sooner or later will be required.
Without being too technical, the OVP is a main juncture point for all the signals that the engine needs to start and run.

I'm not sure to be honest, but as my car was shaking, it felt like it was gonna die, kind of like how a manual stalls if you dont give it enough gas. When i talked to my mechanic after the transmission died, I told him the symptoms i had been experiencing earlier that week, and he said yea, it was the transmission slowly but surely giving out.

Hope its not the transmission in your case, goodluck!

I got a quote for $2,500 for my 500E for complete top-notch tranny rebuild by an MB specialist.

That's the same or less than a domestic - my '89 Taurus was $2,200, 9 years ago!

yea, my local benz dealer quoted $5k, while my mechanic said 2. But for the 5k price tag i would be getting a better warranty, and a transmission i knew would be the best rebuilt money can buy, at least that statement is true assuming you can trust the dealer, my mechanic said if he did it, it would only be under warranty for a year, not sure what we will choose

Ok, enough about the tranny, that's not the problem with my car

I replaced the OVP with the new dual fuse red-top version and that's not the culprit. Thinking MAS or injectors.....grrrr.....

How do I replace the ICV? I took the air filter cover off, took out the filter and don't know where to go from there...can't even figure out how to take the bottom half assembly of the air filter off...

Anyone?

Mark - you may want to soldier on with this, but...
if you get too frustrated, perhaps you should pay for a diagnosis by a good indy.

I hear, from Audi/VW garage's that they recommend MB customers to go to Milo's on Kingsway, near Fraser, not far from you. Mucho experience.
My regular guy Bernie, at MB Euromotors, West 7th and Yukon, at the south end of the Cambie Bridge is near you too. He would know the cure. Nice guy, but he is expen$ive. (Massaged my 400,000km 16V engine back to happy motoring). MB-trained in Germany.

Good luck - Enzo is a unique and valued member of our BC/PacNW community.
