Front tyre wear
I have a 1994 280E with 230k kilometres on the clock. The front drivers side tyre occasionally makes contact with the fender upon hitting a bump when when turning into a low speed corner. A driveway with a pronounced kerb will do it.
The suspension has been checked out and the side that scrapes is about 1 inch lower than spec. The other side is OK.
Tyres on 16 inch mag rims are standard size.
I find it hard to believe that this could be caused by a 1 inch drop in ride height. Anyone have any ideas??
if one side is lower than the other there definitely something wrong with the car. The options are:
*Broken main spring. Often hard to see by only looking at it, since the either the last top or bottom turn breaks and may lower the side, by that magnitude.
*the main axle joint may be worn out. Sorry but I dont know the exact english expression for that part. It sits right behind the axle assembly and basically connects the wheels to the body by means of a "bearing". If this is worn it sometimes makes screeching noises when turning the steering wheel, and it lowers the worn side of the car, may be not exactly a whole inch, but using 16" rims, maybe with the wrong offset could cause the problem of rubbing against the fendor.
