Fuse/Emergency Flasher Malfunction/Secret Button

About three days ago I opened the trunk of my E320 1995 and for some reason the alarm went off. I then opened the door and tried to start the car so the alarm would stop, no luck though. My solution was to lift the hood and remove the C and # 9 fuse so the alarm would cease. After getting the alarm to stop i read the manual and found that inserting the key in the door would stop the alarm from sounding. I then replaced the fuses.

Here is the problem, since then while i am driving i hear an intermittent clicking that goes for 5 -20 seconds. The sound comes from the dash, under the steering column and sounds like the clicking sound that the emer. flashers make. After a short period of time it stops. Only to start up again a few seconds or minutes later. The emergency flashers on all four corners of the exterior lenses flash when this is going on. The Red toggle flasher on the dash does not flash however. Has anyone experienced this issue? The fuses are ok, and i have never had this malfunction prior to removing those fuses.

Under the drivers dash is black plastic shield that covers the hole under dash section. To the left of the steering column is a tiny push button. Does anyone have an idea what it does. I have pressed it while investigating the previous issue and it seems to activate this clicking sound. Anyone have any clues to my problems? Thanks.

That push button most likely is connected to an aftermarket alarm. I would guess that aftermarket alarm is flashing your turn signals. I would remove that panel and see if there is an alarm there and then unplug it.

protective panel

I bet you are correct about the button being for the alarm. Removing the protective panel is proving to be a problem though. After half an hout i gave up
trying to remove it. I thought better to let it be than force something. I am going to do a bit of looking on the net to se what i can find regarding removal of the panel. Any clues?
Thanks

This is from memory so there maybe something i miss... You have to remove the floormat and the carpet that is under that, you should see bare floor. Then there is a white plastic nut that must be removed. Lastly remove two screws that hold the panel to the knee bolster, then pull towards the front of the car to remove.
