Turn Key Nothing?
i have an '86 300E that makes a clicking sound when starting it.
it's been doing it for atleast a year and now i'm experiencing an intermittant key-key-nothing situation. the local benz shop replaced the starter and it still wouldn't start. any thoughts or gut instincts would be greatly appreciated!

I would also have the starter checked. But if it is not starting at all after replacing the starter, try to get your money back. Before swapping the starter they should have checked it. Maybe its only the ignition switch which does not "tell" the starter to do what it is supposed to do. But this would be the first check of a professional whether the starter gets "juice" when the key is turned.
The clicking noise may not necessarily be caused by the starter (it can), since there are so many relays switching when the key gets turned, and it's hard to tell from where the noise may come.

if the car does not always start in the P posotion...
try putting it in neutral.... my car has a bad "safety park switch" so i usually have to put it in neutral b4 i start. If thats teh case not a big problem just a matter of not being lazy..

If your battery is in good shape(younger than four years old), and nothing happens when you turn the key, the odds are excellent that you need to replace your starter! If you have a 124 that is over ten years old, be thankfull that this little motor has lasted so long. P.

Tranny starts in N, not P
My '86 doesn't start in P anymore so I need to put it in Neutal like SLV300E,
Does anyone else have this problem and know how to fix this?
My car has nearly 300k and still runs strong. I just replaced the valve guide seals (fairly simple) and now there is very little oil consumption.

Just need to replace the neutral safety switch!
It is not too hard. You just have to get under the vehicle next to the transmission. If you are not mechanically inclined, leave for the pros...otherwise, go for it!
