Transmission service question

I once owned a 1991 300E which was probably one of the best cars I have ever owned. I recently found a nice 300E that has got me to thinking about another one. It has 137K miles and is a two owner. The current owner said about 500 miles ago he did a fluid/filter change on the transmission. I asked if he knew if it had been serviced prior to that and he said he didn't but that the mechanic said the fluid was very clean when he changed it.

My concern is if the tranny had never been serviced prior to 137K miles, could this cause premature tranny failure? It shifts out good and all but that doesn't mean anything right now.

Thoughts?

Either or - I was really thinking more along the lines of slipping but any issue that might result primarily due to servicing a tranny that had never been serviced before is a concern. I know there is no way to guarantee how long a tranny will last but I certainly don't want to see premature failure due to the servicing of the tranny.

If the car was driven smart/conservatively, it shouldnt have needed any major servicing. Sounds like he knows how to change the filter and such, and thats all they do in a 30-60-90k anyway.

Chances are it will need a rebuild before 200k, but thats a long way off.

if it goes into gear with less than a second delay, usually that means its fine. a delay in engaging, especially reverse, is a sign. as is a 2- 3 flare and slipping.

i have rebuilt the 722.3 type transmission before and if the car shift normal at the correct road speed and rpm and does not delay the shift you are probly ok - some shops i have seen adjust the boden cable out and turn in the modulator ( explain ) the downshift cable USA boden cable MB book tells the trans when to shift - the modulator tells it how firm -ssooo if its working normal as you remember i would say its fine -- jz
