Question Oil in Breather Hose 300TE-24v

I noticed on lifting the bonnet to investigate the cause of a little hesitation on acceleration above 120mph, that the breather hose to the camshaft cover at the air filter end had come away.

On fixing this, I noticed that there was a little oil in the hose and on removing the air filter cover, found a little oil inside the filter housing. The filter (4500 miles old) is still clean (save a few flies) and there is no evidence of oil.

I am not sure as to the question to ask, only that this does not appear normal......

1) would the breather hose account for the hesitation and poor starting in the recent cold/damp weather.
2) what can I do next with regard to the oil in the breather hose and the filter housing?

Many thanks
Griff

To answer question 1, I don't think the breather hose would have any effect on the hesitation or poor starting. The breather hose only goes into the air filter box to get clean air. The worst that can happen with the hose off is that dirt can get into the valve cover and also into the air filter box.

To answer question 2, I would imagine that since the breather hose is only a inch or two higher than the cam and valves that oil sprays into the hose and after time slowly gets further up until it reaches the air filter box. Either that or your oil level is way to high.

It's the breather hose' task to divert the oily fumes from the valve chamber into the engine's intake and burn it. Due to cold weather some of the oil might condensate in the hose and/or the filter housing. Nothing to worry about at all.
Starting hesitation has most probably another reason(s). Hard to tell from here w/o have more precise facts.
