Two Holes in Air Filter Cover, '92 300E

Just bought a 1992 300E (2.6 engine) and went to look at the air filter and noticed two holes in the top cover, one that has a tube that goes back to the valve cover to collect vapor gases from there (which makes sense), but the other hole had nothing connected to it. It is closer to the center and someone had tape over it at one time. I am wondering if this is a hole for a screw to secure the cover, or if it should be connected to something. Can someone out there with a similar model check and see what this might be? Thanks.

W201, W124, W126, . . .
The 2nd hole is just to set up the CO.

There is a setup screw deep under it.

You can tape it over or not, but there is no access to the intake box.

Thanks for the answer. What was over the hole originally, some type of plug? It just doesn't look right with a hole in the top of the cleaner cover.
