clicking engine sound 1995 Cab
hi all,
my 1995 E320 cabriolet w/ 80k miles is only driven about 2k miles/yr, but i'm finding the engine to have light clicking sounds in the morning for the first 5 minutes until the engine warms up to 80 deg C.
my impression was that these engines were bulletproof and can go 150-200k miles easily when i bot the car 3 yrs ago. so far, i've only used synthetic oil, and i've changed the oil each yr regardless of the miles driven.
is this serious, is this normal...should i do anything about it?
i mainly want to make sure it's not something serious that needs to be addressed. thx.
p.s. once it hits 80 deg, the car drives great![Smilie](https://mbworld.org/forums/images/smilies/smile.gif)

Enzo, my Benzo
I have the same sound ( i can only assume without hearing yours) and it's just the little "shock" attatched to the fan belt tensioner...not a big deal....pita to swap out though...

i have the same sounds as well. it started off quite noticeable in the morning i think its jus the sound of the tappets before the oil fully lubricates them. i changed the oil the other day an it seems to have done something. i dont think its any thing to worry about.

oil pump?
Mine makes a strange noise upon start up, such as what you describe. The previous owner complained when the car was new, and was diagnosed as the oil pump, a normal sound until it warms up. Just my 2cents.

that said, are any of you guys having it fixed, or just leaving it as is?
if it's oil pump, how much to fix?

Could be that because the car is driven so little, if the car sits for a long time then the oil will run out of the hydraulic lifters and until they fill back up with oil then you could get a loud ticking. If you've ever heard m119 lifter tick it can sound like that or louder....
I would really doubt it is the oil pump, and it would be a sizable job to replace it. Benz's are usually pretty good about stuff like that, beefing it up so it lasts.
You can look through the oil cap to see if there is any tappit or cam lobe wear.
