AIR PUMP Destruction 1995 E320
Every time I hear it whining on a cold start I worry about the bearings locking up and doing the same. Anyone else have this happen or has anyone oiled or "maintained" their air-pump. Thanks
the pump is mag-clutch engaged for a few seconds on cold start-up (as normal) to do a smog thing when the motor runs rich (think choked) for a while. It disengages when operating temp creeps up a notch from cold. They are not full time pumps that effect emissions (when warm) at idle or cruise.
Therefore, some (even California) owners have successfully yanked them. There is a smaller belt available at your basic auto store that works perfectly minus Mr. Pump. It also won't trip a check-engine lamp or present an issue at the dread smog-check station.
No more squawking, no more worries, ... no more pump. Why throw big bucks at a high mile car that really doesn't need the bugger?
