E320 head off today!

1995 e320 head removed today with the assistance of my brand new Big Red engine hoist. Please see my web site and comment.

http://home.earthlink.net/~sasjzl/me...cementjourney/

I am now deciding how much I want to do it, if anything, at a machine shop. 197k miles. Problem was it was leaking oil like a sieve from the front right of the head. I am thinking of just bringing it down to my local indy place and asking them what they would do. It was a struggle for sure getting it out but I learned alot about my Merc and it was not that bad.

Thanks,
Jim Lee

It's pretty simple really, if you want to keep the car and/or not shaft the next guy, have a good machine shop boil/clean/pressure check the head and go through it-totally. Besides a diesel engine head, do you know any gas heads that wouldn't need a rebuild at 197K?? Your pictures pretty much verify that, BTW.

At 189K miles I had the valve seals done and the head was cleaned and deburred and put back on. It ran another 63K miles before somebody rear ended the car and totaled it. Do the valve seals while you are at this stage. It is well worth it. The W124 was a far better built car than the newer W210. The metal was thicker and the W124 was built to a standard not a price point like the W210. If the body is good then a head rebuild would be worth it.

I am in the middle of the same job. Did you have to use the prescribed special tool to remover the right side chain tension guide? If not how did you get that bugger out of there?
